Antonia C. Novello To Deliver Commencement Address At Nova Southeastern University

Ft Lauderdale-Davie, FL.-On Saturday, May 12, 2007, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services will jointly hold NSU’s 2007 Undergraduate Commencement Exercises.

Antonia C. Novello, MD, will address an audience of more than 5,000 students, family members, and friends at the ceremony, which will be held at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, FL.

Dr. Novello, a highly regarded physician and public health official, was appointed US Surgeon General by President George H.W. Bush, serving as the first woman and first Hispanic to be appointed to this post. Additional highlights of her public service career include tenures as Commissioner of Health for the State of New York and Special Representative for Health and Nutrition with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Don Rosenblum, Ph.D., dean of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, praised the guest speaker in saying, “She championed public health causes that included pediatric AIDS as well as underage drinking and smoking. Also, she has served as an ardent advocate for women, children, and minorities throughout her medical and public health career.” Novello has received numerous rewards and honors for her distinguished service.

Novello’s commencement address will serve as a capstone for the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ 2006-2007 academic theme Identity.

The college framed programs, guest lectures and activities around this theme that united our community in interdisciplinary exploration, ultimately challenging our students to celebrate individual definitions of identity,  as part of its mission to prepare students for rich professional careers as active citizens of a complex world.
