200 Years of America's Coast Survey
Through June 30, 2007
Library Gallery, second floor
This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Coast Survey, America’s oldest scientific agency and the beginnings of NOAA.
Originally charged by Thomas Jefferson to provide a “complete and accurate chart of every part of the coasts” of the United States, NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey today holds more than 20,000 historical nautical charts and continually updates its collection of 1,000 current charts.
The second floor Art Gallery of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Technology Center (3100 Ray Ferrero Boulevard) is showcasing a 20-poster exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution and NOAA until June 30. The exhibit explores the Coast Survey’s history, accomplishments, and scientific contributions. The exhibit depicts the people, tools and technology, and case studies of the Survey, and is richly illustrated with photos, charts, and artwork held in the Survey’s archives.
Exhibit Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m, Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Please contact the Alvin Sherman Library, Research and Technology Center at 954-262-4637 or log on to http://www.nova.edu/library/about/events/exhibits.html for more information.
