Guy Harvey Making A Splash At
The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Int'l Airport
Renowned marine wildlife artists to complete 60 X 40 foot
mural at airport terminal
FORT
LAUDERDALE-DAVIE , Fla. – Flying into the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood
International Airport is now an underwater experience.
Concourse B has been transformed into the deep
blue sea by renowned marine wildlife artist, Guy Harvey. He is painting
a mural approximately 60 X 40 feet that will plunge visitors to South
Florida immediately into the Atlantic Ocean . After nearly one year of
work, the mural is scheduled to be completed Tuesday, April 19. Finishing
touches will take place between noon and 3:00 p.m. , with photo opportunities
available for interested onlookers.
The image Guy Harvey is creating includes the
skyline of downtown Fort Lauderdale and an underwater scene featuring
a sunken freighter, which functions as an artificial reef. The marine
wildlife species around the freighter are all indigenous to South Florida
's waters.
The process of creating this scale of artwork
is not an easy feat. The airport terminal wall had to be covered with
sheets of metal in order to create a “canvas.” At that point,
the metal sheets were covered with vinyl on which Guy Harvey painted
an underwater scene that emulates the beauty of our oceans. Guy Harvey
will spend more than five days hand-painting the final images over the
vinyl canvas.
A portion of the proceeds for the mural will
go toward the fish conservation research taking place at the Guy Harvey
Research Institute at the Nova Southeastern University 's Oceanographic
Center. As a marine biologist, Guy Harvey is a long-time supporter of
fish and marine conservation. His artwork proceeds often benefit the
important marine research needed to promote effective conservation efforts.
