Public Speaking Workshop Offered at NSU's Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Does speaking in public make you break out in a cold sweat? A new workshop offered by Nova Southeastern University's Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) can help ease the jitters. "Speak and Deliver with Confidence: A Public Speaking Workshop" will be offered on July 17 and 18, 2004 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the Alumni Hall Auditorium on NSU's east campus, 3100 SW 9th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.

Designed to make participants competent communicators across public settings, the instructor will draw from communication, psychology, business, and theatre disciplines to teach valuable public speaking principals. The workshop experience will also enable participants to develop their oral communication skills and to understand their responsibilities as speaker-listener-critic in a diverse world.

The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding anxiety and learning relaxation techniques

  • Being an audience-centered speaker

  • Building credibility and rapport with the audience

  • Learning how to construct speeches

  • Constructing and displaying visual aids

  • Learning effective delivery- verbal and non-verbal communication

  • Harnessing the power of persuasion

Registration fees for the workshop are $350 for professionals with 20% discount for groups of 5 or more; and $200 for students. Attendees who register by July 2 will receive a $75.00 discount.

Students who attend “Speak and Deliver with Confidence: A Public Speaking Workshop” and the biographical interviewing workshop, “Please Tell Me Your Life Story,” which will be offered on July 19-20, are eligible to attend both workshops for the price of one. (Student discount and Early Registration discounts cannot be combined.)

The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Nova Southeastern University offers interdisciplinary programs in conflict analysis and resolution, family therapy, peace studies, college student personnel administration, health care conflict resolution, medical family therapy, family studies, and joint programs with the Criminal Justice Institute and the Shepard Broad Law Center.  The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is also a home of the two academic journals: "Peace and Conflict Studies," and "The Qualitative Report."
