FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Nova Southeastern University’s Jim & Jan Moran Family Center Village, which houses the Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies, has received a permanent exhibit installed by acclaimed artist DeLoss McGraw. The exhibit was made possible by a designated gift from an anonymous donor.

McGraw created wall treatments within the Family Center Village on which his paintings, monotype prints, and whimsical chair sculptures are hung. The exhibit is taken in part from his illustrations for Lewis Carroll’s book “ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” which won McGraw the Illustrator’s Society Book of the Year Award in 2002. Its fanciful theme was chosen in keeping with the institute’s curriculum, which focuses heavily on reading, as well as for the exhibit’s wide range of colors.

“The Mailman Segal Institute is grateful to our donor and to Deloss McGraw for helping to make this permanent exhibit possible,” said Wendy Masi, dean of the Mailman Segal Institute. “We feel it is important for children to be exposed to art, and to experience it, for it is a way of expressing oneself and expressing feelings without using words. Art motivates children, it engages them and provokes question. This falls in line with our goal to help children tap into their creativity, and help them learn how to form and express their ideas.”

McGraw’s artwork has been exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe, and can be found in numerous museums, corporate and private collections. His pieces have received critical acclaim in over 80 solo exhibitions, and are collected by such eminent institutions as Oxford, Harvard, Syracuse, Temple and Cornell Universities, as well as by the Whitney Museum of American Art Library Collection, The Library of Congress, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art recently acquired two of his paintings.

NSU’s Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies, formerly known as the Family Center, provides a range of programs designed to strengthen families and enhance the ability of parents and caregivers to foster the healthy development of children.
