NSU Offers Free Programs In June At The Alvin Sherman Library, research, And Information Technology Center
FORT LAUDERDALE , FL- Children, teens and adults can participate in free programs during June at Nova Southeastern University’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, a joint-use facility with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.
Residents of all ages have a variety of programs from which to choose. These include:
Programs for Children:
- Saturday, June 12: A South Florida Parenting Magazine mini-event featuring games, crafts, prizes, live entertainment, and a giant pirate ship ride. Free South Florida Parenting Fun Pass for the first 200 to register for summer reading programs. All ages, 12:00-4:00 p.m.
- Monday, June 14: Enjoy folklore and fun at Donna Washington’s Far East Tales. Ages 6-11, 2:00-2:45 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 15: Underwater Photography with Michael O'Neil, author of Fishy Friends: a Journey through the Coral Kingdom. See a demonstration of the special camera and SCUBA equipment used to create his artwork. All ages, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 15: Bilingual Family Storytime (Cuentos para La Familia) - Stories and songs in English and Spanish (Cuentos y Canciones en Inglés y Español). All ages, 7:00-7:30 p.m.
- Wednesday, June 16: Sunshine Stories - Sing-a-long with singer/guitarist Douglas Black. Ages 3 and up, 10:00-10:30 a.m.
- Wednesday, June 16 & Wednesday, June 23: Software Storytime in Children's Computer Lab. Ages 3 and up with caregiver, 10:30-11:00 a.m.
- Thursday, June 17: Writer's Institute Kick-off featuring Edward Bloor, author of young adult novels Tangerine and Crusader, who will discuss the writing process. Books available for purchase and signing, light refreshments. All ages, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
- Friday, June 18: Florida Freeplay: a One-on-One Play Experience for ages 6-35 months with adult, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Limited weekly enrollment, pre-registration begins Sunday of each program week. Call (954) 262-5477.
- Saturday, June 19: Super Saturdays with Allison Jackson, author of I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie. This program includes a presentation on the writing process with puppets, stories, and more. Books available for purchase and signing, light refreshments. All ages, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
- Monday, June 21: Folklore & Fun with Florida Fantasy Theater’s, “Never Everglades,” a fairytale about protecting the environment for ages 6-11, 2-2:40 p.m.
- Tuesday, June 22: Florida Souvenir Shop Craft – have fun creating all kinds of art projects, 2-3:00 p.m. For ages 8-12.
- Tuesday, June 22: Bilingual Family Storytime (Cuentos para La Familia) - Stories and songs in English and Spanish with Carrie Sue Ayvar. All ages, 7:00-7:45 p.m.
- Wednesday, June 23: Sunshine Stores – Happy Birthday Broward County Library. The Broward County Library celebrates its 30 th birthday – join in for a big reading party, 10-10:30 a.m. for ages 3 and up.
- Thursday, June 24: Writer’s Institute – Joanne Hyppolite on Middle Grade Fiction, 2-3:30 p.m. for ages 10-13. Author Joanne Hyppolite, who wrote, Ola Shakes It Up and Seth and Samona will discuss her writing process. Reception follows presentation. Pre-registration required; call (954) 262-5477.
- Saturday, June 26: Super Saturdays features Jiggleman’s Comic Circus Acrobat and Juggling Show, for all ages, 2-2:30 p.m. Jiggleman (aka Banks Helfrich), is a comic circus acrobat and juggler who has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman.
- Monday, June 28: Folkfore & Fun with Jomo’s African Vibrations, for ages 6-11, 2-2:45 p.m. Recording artist Jomo (aka Cleodis Faulks) will give a hands-on demonstration of the African mbira.
- Tuesday, June 29: Florida Souvenir Shop Craft, ages 8-12, 2-3:00 p.m. Children will create all kinds of art projects.
- Tuesday, June 29: Bilingual Family Storytime/Cuentos para la Familia with Tia Ria and Dawn, for all ages, 7-7:45 p.m.
Young Adult Programs
- Wednesday, June 16:Web Design Camp. The Basics: HTML and Design Principles (Part 1 required). Ages 12-17, 1:00-3:45 p.m. Teen Computer Lab, limited space, pre-registration required, (954) 262-5477. Attendance at Basics class required for admittance to following weeks in series.

Exhibits – Through July 8
"Exploration 2004: The Oenology Expedition to Chile." NSU's Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Professor Barry Barker, Ph.D., and a group of NSU students and travel photographers documented the natural habitat, environment, and ecosystems of the spectacular vineyards of Chile during the winter months.
Displays
CDs by African-American musicians, singers, and composers are available in celebration of Black Music Month.
