Nova Southeastern
University to Offer 2-Day Workshop On Biographical Interviewing
WHO/WHAT: Nova Southeastern University's Graduate
School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) will offer a biographical
interviewing workshop entitled, "Please Tell Me Your Life Story."
Biographical interviewing, which elicits people's life stories,
is a difficult reporting method used in social science research and
in other settings, including education, family interviewing, conflict
management and counseling.
WHEN: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, July 19
and Tuesday, July 20, 2004
WHERE: Alumni Hall Auditorium on Nova Southeastern
University's east campus, 3100 SW 9th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.
BACKGROUND: Biographical interviewing has been
found to be an extremely sensitive technique for documenting and
learning about the life experiences of people who have experienced
massive social trauma - such as war, genocide, being a refugee, etc.
- and personal traumas and crises - such as rape, losing a child,
surviving a serious traffic accident, etc. Although often used to
document such traumas, biographical interviewing is also a good tool
for eliciting stories from 'ordinary' people who have lived through
different social and historical periods and who can provide a "personal
window" into our evolving world.
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Know the basics of biographical interviewing
- Be able to embark on a biographical interview of their own
- Be able to incorporate a number of different interview elements
in their work
- Gain basic knowledge concerning possible uses of biographical
interviewing
- Have introductory knowledge on ways of interpreting the interview
materials
REGISTRATION: Registration fees for the workshop
are $350 for professionals with 20% discount for groups of 5 or more;
