NSU Offers Fun Free Programs in July at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center

FORT LAUDERDALE , FL- Children, teens and adults can participate in free programs during July at Nova Southeastern University's Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, a joint-use facility with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners.

Residents of all ages have a variety of programs from which to choose.

Programs for Children:

  • Thursday, July 1:   Writer's Institute: Bring It and Bind It! Create, type, save, print and bind your project, ages 10-13, 2:00-3:30 p.m., small group size. Pre-registration begins two weeks prior to program, (954) 262-5477.
  • Fridays - July 9, July 9, July 16, July 23, July 30 :  Florida Freeplay: a One-on-One Play Experience, ages 6-35 months with adult, 10:00-11:00 a.m.  Limited weekly enrollment, pre-registration begins Sunday of each program week (954) 262-5477.
  • Saturday, July 3: Super Saturday: Family Fun and Games Day!  Old-fashioned board games, coloring fun and puzzles galore, all ages, 2:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays - July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27: Florida Souvenir Shop Craft, ages 8-12, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
  • Tuesdays - July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27: Bilingual Family Storytime (Cuentos Para La Familia): Stories and Songs in English and Spanish, all ages, 7:00-7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesdays - Sunshine Stories: Ages 3 and up, 10:00-10:30 a.m., July 7: SPASH!; July 14: Issac Bashevis Singer's 100 th Birthday; July 21: Jane Stratren Puppets; July 28 : Self directed story time with caregiver.
  • Wednesdays July 7, July 14, July 28, Software Storytime, Ages 3 and up, 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Thursday, July 8: Writer's Institute: Laurie Friedman, author of "Mallory on the Move," will lead a workshop on writing a series. Ages 10-13, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Pre-registration begins two weeks prior to program, (954) 262-5477.
  • Mondays, Folklore & Fun, 2:00-2:45 p.m. Musical tales from different cultures and countries for ages 6-11. July 12: Baba Adekemi Lyons' African stories the African continent with renowned storyteller, Baba Adekemi; July 19: Judy Gail's Jewish Songs and Stories in honor of Isaac Bashevis Singer; July 26: surprise guest.
  • Super Saturday, July 17: Duck in a Truck – comic puppet show. All ages, 2:00-2:45 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 22: Writer's Institute: Michael McKeever on Writing Scripts Ages 10-13, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Pre-registration begins two weeks prior to program, (954) 262-5477.
  • Thursday, July 29: Writer's Institute: Shamele Jenkins on Songwriting, Ages 10-13, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Pre-registration begins two weeks prior to program, (954) 262-5477.
  • Super Saturday, July 31: John Storms' World of Reptiles live animal show, all ages, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
Young Adult Programs:
  • Wednesday, July 7: Creative Scrapbooking, creating personal memories through scrapbooks, ages 12-18, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Pre-registration required, call (954) 262-5477.
  • Saturday, July 10: Comic Book Mania! Anime/Manga discussion with special guests, graphic novel pioneer Will Eisner, and George and Liz Pearson, ages 12-18, 2:00-3:20 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 14: Beading Basics, ages 12-18, 2:00-4:00 p.m. Pre-registration required: (954) 262-5477.
  • Thursday, July 15: Writer's Institute – Gloria Rothstein on Imaginative Writing, ages 10-13, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Pre-registration required, call (954) 262-5477.
  • Wednesday, July 21: Funky Florida Mask Craft, ages 12-18. 2:00-4:00 p.m. Pre-registration required, call (954) 262-5477.
  • Saturday, July 24: Hapkido: Traditional Self-Defense for the Real World. Special guest: Master Jeff Allen and the International Hapkido Federation, 2:00-3:00 p.m. Demostration of proven self-defense techniques used for real life situations.
  • Book Display: 100 Stories for 100 Years, Happy Birthday Issac Bashevis Singer!

Exhibits - Through July 8
"Exploration 2004: The Oenology Expedition to Chile ." NSU's Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Professor Barry Barker, Ph.D., and a group of NSU students and travel photographers documented the natural habitat, environment, and ecosystems of the spectacular vineyards of Chile during the winter months.

The Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center is a joint-use facility with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners . Free card membership allows patrons access to public library collections as well as exclusive university academic resources. The library is located at 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd. , Fort Lauderdale .
