Third Annual Health Fair Offers Free Screenings
Nova Southeastern University and Florida Osteopathic Medical Association Sponsor Event
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - The third annual NSU Health Fair, sponsored by the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) and Nova Southeastern University's (NSU) Health Professions Division, will be held on Saturday, May 10 from 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at the Tower Shops/Home Depot Plaza, University Drive at 595 in Davie.
The Health Fair will feature free health checks and professional consultations for children and adults, including vision, dental, blood pressure, and diabetes screenings. There will be no charge for any screening, or for any consultation with a university-level professional.
"Visitors to the health fair will have a rare opportunity to speak to professionals from our Colleges of Pharmacy, Osteopathic Medicine, Optometry, Dental Medicine, Allied Health, and Medical Sciences," said NSU Vice Chancellor and Deputy Provost Morton Morris, D.O., J.D. "This is our way of giving something back to the community."
NSU's physicians, pharmacists, optometrists, physical therapists, dentists, and other health care providers will staff the booths, along with students from various colleges in the Health Professions Division. Graduate students will schedule screening appointments and assist in evaluations, and pharmacists from NSU's Clinic Pharmacy will be available to offer medication interaction consultations. The health fair will also feature a bloodmobile, and experts in family medicine, audiology, pediatrics, occupational therapy, public health, and geriatrics will be on hand to speak with attendees.
Additionally, the Broward County Fire Department will be at the site with a fire truck, along with area firefighters, giving children and adults an opportunity to meet a few local "heroes."
A "Davie-style Roundup Barbecue," featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, garden burgers, sodas, and all the trimmings will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will continue while the supply lasts. Aramark Dining Services is generously donating the food.
"Last year we had 15 booths," said the organizer of the event, Christopher Siano, who is now graduating from NSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We're hoping to make the event bigger and better this year."
