Where Do I Begin?

Tips on course development approaches

Online course development should begin with a plan. Traditional instructional theories suggest that online course development begin with a systematic approach. While the model below appears to be linear in its approach, it is the inter-relatedness of each phase that is critical in the development process.

A nalysis: Determine the target audience, learner needs and the content requirements.
D esign: Establish instructional goals and objectives based on the needs analysis. Determine resources and teaching strategies that you will use.
D evelopment: Determine how the course will be structured. Begin writing the course materials.
I mplementation: Put into practice the presentation of instruction. Give the lesson.
E valuation: Develop a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction. The emphasis should be on assessing the course and not the learner.

In addition to traditional approaches, some alternative methods suggest a dimensional approach be considered.
