Remarks by NSU President Ray Ferrero, Jr., at the Nov. 5, 2004 , dedication of the Dr. Morton Terry Memorial. “Thank you Dr. Lippman….and good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I am honored today to join you in dedicating this special place in commemoration of the life of a truly great human being….Dr. Morton Terry. Dr. Terry was a giant in the healthcare profession, a leader in medical education, a humanitarian and a friend. Few of us in our lifetime will have such a profound effect on their chosen profession and fellow professionals. Mort Terry created not one, but six colleges in the healthcare field…..a truly remarkable accomplishment. It was Mort Terry who was the driving force that merged then Nova University with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences. And it was Mort Terry who helped guide me when I became this university's fifth president. Every step of the way, Geraldine Terry was by Mort's side. I've always admired Mort and Gerry as a couple, and I'm so pleased she and her family could be with us today. Mort Terry's influence will affect people for generations to come as NSU graduate osteopathic physicians, dentists, optometrists, pharmacists, physician's assistants, nurses, physical therapists and other healthcare professionals provide health care to patients within Florida and throughout the country. There's not a day that goes by that I am not reminded of Mort's effect on my life and the impact he has left on this university. He was a colleague and friend. I see his optimism in the faces of our students. I see his drive and perseverance in the HPD faculty and researchers. And, I feel his presence when I walk into these marvelous facilities. Everyone in the Health Professions Division should be commended for continuing to work hard fulfilling Mort's dreams…. precisely as he had envisioned them. As an example, this past week we announced exciting plans to build a teaching hospital at NSU, along with our long-time partners from the North Broward Hospital District. Mort would be so proud of this next step in our relationship with the Hospital District. Most importantly, he would be genuinely pleased with the planned growth of our services to the citizens of Broward County , while giving his students the real world experience that is crucial to the learning process. This was part of Mort's vision. In a way, this magnificent new hospital facility will represent everything that was Dr. Morton Terry…..innovative, accessible, professional and compassionate. I often repeat the following when I talk about my friend Mort, because it describes him so accurately. They say “Great is the person who plants a tree, not knowing if they will ever enjoy its shade.” Thankfully, Mort saw his trees grow and flourish. It's only fitting that his memorial be here in this garden in full view of the institution he built, and among the students and colleagues he loved so dearly. I suspect that our dear friend Mort is finally taking a moment to enjoy the shade.“
