FORT LAUDERDALE, FL— Andrés Malavé, PhD. has been appointed dean of the College of Pharmacy of Nova Southeastern University. Prior to his appointment as dean, Malavé served as the College of Pharmacy’s Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Affairs and professor of Advanced Neuro-Pharmacology. He was also instrumental in the successful development and administration of NSU’s Entry-level and Post - Baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program in Puerto Rico. “As the profession of pharmacy evolves and a renewed emphasis is placed on patient interaction and counseling, we have every confidence that Dr. Malavé will provide the leadership, vision and skills necessary to guide the College of Pharmacy toward achieving national preeminence,” said Dr. Fred Lippman, chancellor of NSU’s Health Professions Division. “His background in research will help us to stimulate research and integrate those learning opportunities into the curriculum we provide to NSU students and alumni.” Malavé is a 2001 Fulbright Award recipient, whose published works have been included in numerous publications, including the Journal of Chromatography B: Biomedical Applications, Cancer Biochemistry and Biophysics, Life Sciences, European Journal of Pharmacology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Archives of Pharmacology and the International Pharmaceutical Abstracts. Malavé and fellow NSU researcher, Appu Rathinavelu, PhD. also hold a US Patent for “Simple 96-Well Non-Radioactive Assay for Estimating Protein Kinase C and Protein Phosphatase Activity in Biological Samples.” In his 13 years with NSU, Malavé has served as Chair of the Research Council for the Health Professions Division and was a member of the university’s committee on Faculty Scholarship, Research and Professional Development. He was also Chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department from 1992 – 2002, and served as Director of NSU’s International Pharmacy program for two years. Prior to joining NSU, Malavé was dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Puerto Rico for six years. In 2002, Malavé was inducted into the Peruvian Academy of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, and the following year he was elected as a faculty member by the Academic Senate and Chancellor’s Council of the National University of San Marcos in Lima, Peru. Malavé received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. He was awarded his Master of Science (MS) and doctoral degree ( Ph .D. ) PhD. degrees in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Purdue University. He has been a Registered Pharmacist since 1972. Malavé has been an advocate for the profession for more than 30 years, actively participating in the Pan American Health Organization, the American Pharmaceutical Association, and the International Pharmacy Education Advisory Committee. He is also presently a member of the Fulbright Scholar Program’s Specialist Review Committee on Life Sciences D-Medical. Malavé is a member of numerous scientific and professional organizations, including the New York Academy of Science, Society of Neuroscience, American Pharmaceutical Association and the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists. He and his wife Lillian Arce de Malavé live in Weston, Fla. They have four children and three grandchildren: Jose David, Katelynn Vanessa, and Christian Jaime.
