FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION RECOGNIZES NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY FOR COMMITMENT TO HEART HEALTH Dr. Frederick Lippman, Chancellor of the Health Professions Division To Receive Heart Saver Award FORT LAUDERDALE , FL – Every year, more than 225,000 Americans go into sudden cardiac arrest and only 5% survive, mainly because defibrillation is not administered in time. For every minute that goes by, a person's chance of surviving cardiac arrest decreases by 10%. Under the direction of the new Chancellor of the Health Professions Division, Dr. Frederick Lippman, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has initiated one of the strongest Public Access to Defibrillation (PAD), programs in the entire county. NSU is now equipped with 29 automated external defibrillators (AEDs): every major building on NSU's main campus in Davie is equipped with an AED. Under the direction of Kevin Nugent, Director, EMS Education & Training, all of the university's security guards have been trained on how to use the life-saving devices and a campaign to train as many employees as possible is currently under way. In addition to NSU's new AED program, the university has made a major commitment to the fight against our nation's number one killer -- heart disease -- by helping to strengthen the chain of survival. NSU has played host to several American Heart Association events aimed at reducing disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke. In 1999, Maureen Campbell, D.O., FACEP, Medical Director for Nova Southeastern University 's EMS Education & Training, kicked-off its partnership with the American Heart Association by hosting five annual community-wide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) clinics at NSU's Health Professions Division. As a result, more than 4,000 people were trained in the lifesaving skills of CPR. These events were free to the community. NSU also serves as the official site of the annual Broward County American Heart Walk, the largest fundraising event of the American Heart Association in Broward County . On Saturday, March 13th, 2004 , Nova Southeastern University will play host to the third Heart Walk on the NSU's 300-acre campus. More than 15,000 walkers have participated in the Broward Heart Walk on the NSU campus, raising over $700,000 to fund lifesaving heart and stroke research, as well as educational programs of the American Heart Association. As result of Nova Southeastern University 's commitment to heart health, the Broward County Division of the American Heart Association will present Dr. Lippman with a Heart Saver award on March 13 before the Broward County American Heart Walk. “ Nova Southeastern University is clearly dedicated to making Broward County a better, safer place to live and get an education. Dr. Lippman's decision to equip the university with AEDs may literally mean the difference between life and death for someone who goes into cardiac arrest while on the NSU campus. Thank you for helping the American Heart Association take on Broward County 's number one killer,” said David Kniseley, Chairman of the Broward Division of the American Heart Association.
