FORT LAUDERDALE -- People love to talk about the Miami Dolphins. And that is exactly what the Archives Department of Nova Southeastern University is counting on as it embarks on a brand new project to create a permanent oral history record of the Miami Dolphins franchise. In this unique project, a first-of-its-kind collaboration between an NFL team and an independent university, the people doing the talking will be those who know the Dolphins best -- former and current coaches and players, their families, the administrators, the doctors, the support staff behind the scenes, and anyone else who can provide insight into the 30-year history of the Dolphins. The goal of the project is to piece together stories, information, observations, and opinions that will focus on the team's history not only on the field, but off the field as well. What were the factors that contributed to the Dolphins' success? How did that contribution impact the community? What was it like as a child or sibling growing up with a legendary coach, player, or team owner? To answer these and other questions, NSU Archives, working together with the Miami Dolphins, will conduct numerous videotaped interviews in an ongoing process that is expected to begin in the spring of 2001. The information will ultimately be housed in NSU's new 325,000-square-oot Library, Research, and Information Technology Center scheduled to open on NSU's main campus in Fort Lauderdale in the fall of 2001. The oral history will then be available to the public, researchers, and students. The oral history project is the latest collaboration in a unique partnership that has developed since the Miami Dolphins moved their training complex to NSU's campus in 1993. The Dolphins' presence in Broward County, particularly in the town of Davie, has enhanced the town's economy and vitalized the community. Since NSU Archives takes a special interest in local history, and the history of Davie, establishing an oral history of the Dolphins is a logical extension of that interest.
