The Oenology Expedition To Chile -- A Photographic Exhibit - April 8 through July 8, 2004

“EXPLORATION 2004: THE OENOLOGY EXPEDITION TO CHILE – A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT” COMES TO NOVA SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

FORT LAUDERDALE , FL -- Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will host the grand opening of the photographic exhibit, “ Exploration 2004:  The Oenology Expedition To Chile,” on Thursday, Thursday, April 8, 2004 , 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. The event will be held in the atrium of the Alvin Sherman Library , Research, and Information Technology Center , 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd. , Fort Lauderdale , on NSU's main campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The grand opening celebration will include a wine tasting featuring seven wines from the vineyards and region of Chile , and a presentation by Chilean wine expert Juan-Carlos Izquierdo . Izquierdo's family owns the “Santa Eliana” winery in the Colchagua Valley of Central Chile, where they produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere and Chardonnay.  

The exhibition, sponsored by NSU's Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences' Environmental Studies Program, is the brainchild of Environmental Studies associate professor Barry Barker, Ph.D., who along with a group of eight professional photographers, ventured to Chile during the winter months, and took over 15,000 images in order to document oenology, the study of wines and winemaking.    “The Oenology Expedition to Chile ,” will feature 100 of these photographs, which will be on display in the Alvin Sherman library through July 8, 2004.

In addition to Barker, the photographers whose work is included in this year's exhibit are: Ms. Alison DeFalco, New York; Collette Eddy, Tampa, FL; Alan Goldstein, New York, Jim Grant, New York, Nancy Kitchen, Rahway, New Jersey; Merry Ridenbach, St. Petersburg, FL; Cindy Weatherby, Tampa, FL, Ted Whiting, New York.

During the past five years, Barker and several students, professional and free lance travel photographers have traveled to a different third world or developing country and documented the natural landscapes, wildlife, and cultures of the country to study ecotourism (the impact of tourism on the natural environment). Previous trips included studying the effects of ecotourism in Costa Rico, Malaysia , on the East African region, China , the Amazonia Cloud Forest, and Baños , Ecuador .

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, led by Dean Norma M. Goonen, Ed.D., offers 16 majors including Environmental Science. The Environmental Science major involves the systematic study of the environment and man's proper place within it. It is a highly interdisciplinary subject integrating chemistry, geology, biology, statistics, atmospheric sciences, engineering and physics together with the social sciences and humanities in a broad, holistic study of the world.
