NSU Baseball to Host “Dinner on the Diamond” Featuring Hall of Fame Legend Tommy Lasorda
The inaugural NSU Baseball “Dinner on the Diamond” event, featuring baseball Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda as the guest speaker, will be held on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:00 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex. The night of entertainment will include an Italian buffet dinner, silent auction and the keynote address by Lasorda. Tickets for the fund-raiser are $75 per person, with corporate tables of eight available for $500 each. Business or casual attire is recommended for the evening. All proceeds from the event will help to benefit the NSU baseball program. Regarded by many as baseball’s most popular ambassador, Lasorda begins his 56th season in the Los Angeles Dodger organization and 10th as vice president. In his current front-office capacity, Lasorda spends much of his time scouting, evaluating and teaching minor league players, as well as spreading baseball goodwill to thousands by making more than 100 speeches and appearances each year for various charities, private groups, and military personnel. As the manager of the L.A. Dodgers, Lasorda compiled 1,599 victories and won two World Series Championships, four National League pennants, and eight division titles in an extraordinary 20-year career before his retirement in 1996. In 1997, Lasorda was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in his first year of eligibility. Lasorda’s uniform number (2) was retired by the Dodgers on August 15, 1997, and the main street that leads to the entrance of Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, was renamed Tommy Lasorda Lane on March 5, 1997. Lasorda served as the manager of the U.S. baseball team for the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. His team, consisting primarily of collegiate and little-known professional players, was considered an underdog by many, but under Lasorda’s direction, Team USA went on to dramatically capture the gold medal for baseball. The NSU baseball team is currently 15-8, having won 10 of their last 14 games, and have received votes in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine NCAA Division II National Top-30 Poll. The Knights are competing in their third year as members of the NCAA Division II and are provisional members of the Sunshine State Conference.
