NSU Geriatric Department Offers Unique Services to Community

The Geriatric Department under the direction of Naushira Pandya, M.D., Chair/Division of Geriatrics continues to offer unique services to our community of senior citizens.

What is Geriatrics?

Geriatrics is a specialty that focuses on the medical care of older adults (usually over age 55, but sometimes younger) with complex or multiple medical problems, who may also be experiencing psychological and social problems, and a decline in functional ability to care for themselves. Geriatricians usually work in collaboration with other health care disciplines to screen and diagnose physical and psychosocial impairments, and functional disabilities in frail older people.

Who is a Geriatrician?

A geriatrician is a family physician or an internist with additional one or two year specialty (fellowship) training in geriatrics.

Who would benefit from care provided in a geriatrics clinic?

Persons with:

  • Memory problems or dementia
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Frequent falls
  • Difficulty with balance or walking
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Incontinence
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Weight loss
  • Sleep problems
  • Decline in ability to care for self
  • Pressure sores
  • Diabetes with associated complications
  • Hypertension or heart failure
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Osteoporosis
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Arthritis or other painful conditions
  • Any other general medical condition
