The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) Department of Family Therapy has developed a new Graduate Certificate in Family Ministry that will launch next trimester. This online, 24-credit hour, graduate specialization is designed to assist ministry leaders and others by expanding their counseling skills and adding to the range and scope of possibility for change in families and individuals. Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Family Ministry will have the opportunity to build upon their existing counseling skills, broaden the scope of their ministerial counseling practice, increase their confidence in working with family issues such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, and teen suicide, and strengthen their ability to manage family life transitions such as marriage, childbirth, adolescent years, leaving home, mid-life changes, and elder care concerns. The Department of Family Therapy trains marriage and family therapists to help clients—individuals, couples, and families—create positive changes in their relationships. The core philosophy underlying the department’s work is that positive change can be brought about by helping clients to focus and build upon their own existing strengths and resources. Programs are built on the assumption that the best way to help people is to help them see and understand the relationship contexts which shape their life. For more information on the Graduate Certificate in Family Ministry please contact Debra A. Nixon, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Therapy at 954-262-3008 or nixond@nsu.nova.edu.
