SHSS to Host International Day of Peace

September 21 marks International Day of Peace – a day set aside by the United Nations to celebrate peace and non-violence around the globe.

The General Assembly of the UN in 2001 declared September 1 as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. All member nations, UN organizations, regional and non-governmental organizations, and individuals were encouraged to commemorate the day through education and public awareness.

The Department of Conflict Analysis and Resolution (DCAR) at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) is initiating the celebration and observation in our community. Participants will gather at 12:00 p.m. on NSU's Main Campus for a full day of activities, which will include:

  • Main ceremony – key note speakers
  • Workshops on reconciliation, forgiveness and peacemaking
  • Peace flags project – come paint your small flag for peace that will be combined into a giant flag for peace
  • Films on issues of peace from around the world
  • Information on peace and social justice activities in the community (and beyond)
  • Creation of peace circles, a peace tree (for specific suggestions of how people can contribute to peace)
  • Food and music
If you would like to get involved in the planning of this important event please contact, Lauren Hill at 954-262-3057.
