NSU Counseling Center for Older Adults (NCCOA)

The NCCOA program welcomes any older adults (age 55 or older) who are interested in finding more effective ways of managing difficult situations, uncomfortable feelings, or problem habits that can occur in their lives. Care is provided through individual counseling as well as through periodic educational and coping skill-building workshops as part of our GOALS (Gaining Older Adult Life Skills) series. Each program of counseling begins with a thorough review of the person's current status and discussion of their goals for the outcome of the therapy.

Individual counseling can be especially helpful for problems related to depression, anxiety, anger, guilt, and feelings of hopelessness or helplessness. The GOALS workshop series is conducted like classes. Participants can learn how to improve the life skills helpful for coping with the difficulties and challenges of the older adult years at their own pace. They can also learn how to include more of the pleasures and advantages of this phase of life. In the workshops, the program leader will present and demonstrate skill techniques and also give the participants the opportunity to practice and receive feedback on what they have learned. The workshops are offered periodically in stress management, relaxation training, mindfulness mediation, and assertive communication.
