NSU Hosts Disabled Athlete Kyle Maynard for Life 101...Personally Speaking

Kyle Maynard, the disabled wrestler and recipient of the 2004 ESPY Award for Best Athlete with a Disability, was the guest for NSU’s "Life 101…Personally Speaking" on Monday, February 7.

As part of the format of “Life 101…Personally Speaking,” NSU Professor Mark Cavanaugh, Ph.D., chatted with Maynard during the casual interview held in the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center.

Maynard, who was born with congenital amputation that left him with only three major joints: a neck and two shoulders, has never let his disability hold him back.  Despite his physical differences, he was one of the top high school wrestlers in Georgia, and his visit to the Georgia State Wrestling Championship left him with an impressive record of 35-16.  He also narrowly missed All-American status at the National High School Senior Wrestling Championships. Maynard, who attends the University of Georgia, won his first collegiate wrestling match in December 2004.

In addition to the ESPY Award, Maynard has received the 2004 President’s Award for Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame.

The evening concluded with a question-and-answer session by the auditorium audience, and a reception held in the lobby/plaza area.
