Eating Healthy During the Holidays!
By Autumn Singer, Office of Recreation and Wellness

It seems that the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day revolve around food. Pastries and holiday goodies are temptations that seem impossible to refuse at parties and family gatherings. Then it will be time for the good 'ol New Years' Eve resolution: “I will lose X pounds.”

So, what can you do to stay on track during the holidays and avoid making the same old resolution? Here are a few tips to help you:

  • Have a snack, such as fruit, an hour before the feast. If you are too hungry, you will probably overeat.
  • Select vegetable and fruit salads without a lot of dressing or whipped cream
  • Take a walk instead of a second helping
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Never skip a meal to conserve calories, it may make you more apt to overeat at the next meal.
  • All foods can fit in moderation. Yes, you can have your favorite treats, just keep an eye on your portion sizes, and balance high and low fat options.
  • Limit or avoid high calorie beverages. Did you know one cup of eggnog has the same calories as a slice of apple pie?

Remember... "All things in moderation" is a good slogan!
