1. PRINT SOURCES  

 

Physical Therapy books and multimedia are classified in the WB 460 section of the library. To find topics on related subjects, look in Novacat, NSU’s online catalog of all electronic, print, and other materials.

·       Circulating books are shelved in the north-west side of the library and can be checked out for four weeks.

·       Reference books are kept in the front on low shelves and are for library use only.

·       Reserve books are held behind the circulation desk and can be used for three hours in the library.

·       Study rooms can be checked out for three hours, both in the HPD Library and the Assembly II Building.

2. MOST USEFUL RESEARCH DATABASES

 

CINAHL  

Covers almost all the English-language nursing journals, publications of the American Nurses association, and the National League for Nursing. It also indexes 13 Allied Health disciplines from 1983 to the present.

                EBSCOhost tutorial from the University of Florida.

 

CIRRIE

Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information and Exchange. Under the auspices of the State University of New York at Buffalo. Links to over 500 Research Centers and Government Agencies. Contains a database of International Rehabilitation Research, information about international conferences, cultural diversity, and other matters of interest to Occupational and Physical Therapists.

 

Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE)

“Critical assessments of systematic reviews from a variety of medical journals.” The editors are “…expert reviewers and information staff of the National Health Services’ Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (NHS CRD) at the University of York, England.” Coverage is from 1966. Topics include diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, screening, and treatment.

 

Dynamed

Evidence-based, full text database delivering very current information on the most common diseases in primary care. Articles are concise with no unnecessary prose.

 

ERIC (Education Resources Information Center)

“ERIC …is an internet-based digital library of education research and information sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education. ERIC provides access to bibliographic records of journal and non-journal literature indexed from 1966 to the present. ERIC also contains a growing collection of full-text materials in Adobe PDF format, including reports from the What Works Clearinghouse.” Articles go back to 1966. There is a wealth of information about health and rehabilitation as it pertains to education.

 

MDConsult

A convenient one-stop site of online books, journals, practice guidelines, drug information, and current topics in medicine. Journal articles are most often in full text.


MEDLINE  (Ovid)

Produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The premier source for bibliographic coverage of biomedical literature. Almost 12 million records from 4,800 journals are indexed and abstracted. From 1966 to the present.

PEDro

The Physiotherapy Evidence Database

 

SPORTDiscus
Provided by the Sport Information Resource Centre, the database offers comprehensive, bibliographic coverage of sport, fitness and related disciplines. This database contains more than 750,000 records with journal and monograph coverage going back to 1800; over 20,000 dissertations and theses and reference to articles in 60 different languages.

 

UpToDate  

A clinical reference that provides quick access to synthesized medical information in an easy-to-use format.

This agency  “…is committed to improving results and outcomes for people with disabilities of all ages.” Aside from providing informational resources, this office is a good place to look for funding for rehabilitation projects of all kinds.

 

DMOZ Open Directory Project: Physical Therapy

A series of links to a large number of sites of interest to physical therapists including associations, journals, different treatments, and a long list of other relevant web sites.

A vast collection of resources for the practitioner.

National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC)

Gateway to an abundance of disability- and rehabilitation-oriented information organized in a variety of formats designed to make it easy for users to find and use. For both the public and for practitioners.

San Diego State University. Subject Guide for Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine

Excellent guide for many facets of exercise physiology and sports medicine.

University of British Columbia. Toby Library. Well organized and easy to use. Covers both Canadian and American Physical Therapy resources.

 

The University of Delaware Library. Covers not only Physical Therapy resources printed and electronic, but also explains the process of writing a research paper. Includes style guides and a lexicon of library terms.

National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR)

“The mission of NCMRR is to foster development of scientific knowledge needed to enhance the health, productivity, independence, and quality of life of persons with disabilities.” Linked with the National Institute of Child Health & Human Development under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health.

 

National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR)

“… provides leadership and support for a comprehensive program of research related to the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. All of our programmatic efforts are aimed at improving the lives of individuals with disabilities from birth through adulthood.” 

 

GPO Access Browse Topics

A general list of links to governmental agencies. Select those offices of particular interest from a drop down list. Provides government information on topics such as AIDS, vital and health statistics, and other pertinent health information. For physical therapy related topics, use the search box.

As with all health-related government agencies, the PT Clinical Center promotes research in rehabilitative medicine and continual improvement in health services for the physically and mentally challenged.
