1. PRINT SOURCES  

 

Nursing books and multimedia are classified for the most part in the WY section of the library. To find topics on related subjects, look in Novacat, NSU’s online catalog of all electronic, print, and other materials. Titles with other call numbers can be found in many of the sections in this subject guide or pathfinder.

·       Circulating books are shelved in the north-west side of the library and can be checked out for four weeks.

·       Reference books are kept in the front on low shelves and are for library use only.

·       Reserve books are held behind the circulation desk and can be used for three hours in the library.

·       Study rooms can be checked out for three hours, both in the HPD Library and in the Assembly II Building.

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR).

Offers funding for candidates interested in basic and clinical research and in obtaining “training on health and illness across the lifespan.”

 

NSF Active Funding Opportunities

Possible funding resources through the National Science Foundation.

The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF).

The CRDF “is a nonprofit organization that promotes international scientific and technical collaboration.”

 

4. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATE EDUCATION

 

College Scholarships.org. Offers scholarships to nurses interested in specializing in a variety of nursing areas. Also provides links to government funding sites.

 

FastWeb.

Touts itself as “the nation's largest, most accurate, and most frequently updated scholarship database online.”

 

March of Dimes. Perinatal Nursing Education.

The March of Dimes offers $5,000 scholarships to nurses who wish to specialize in maternal child nursing.

 

Oncology Nursing Society Foundation.

The foundation has funded scholarships for those individuals who are pursuing a graduate degree in oncology nursing.

CINAHL  

Covers almost all the English-language nursing journals, publications of the American Nurses association, and the National League for Nursing. It also indexes 13 Allied Health disciplines from 1983 to the present.

                EBSCOhost tutorial from the University of Florida.

 

Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE). Can be found in the Cochrane Databases under “Evidence-Based Practice Databases” on the HPD Library homepage.

“Critical assessments of systematic reviews from a variety of medical journals.” The editors are “…expert reviewers and information staff of the National Health Services’ Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (NHS CRD) at the University of York, England.” Coverage is from 1966. Topics include diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, screening, and treatment.

 

ERIC (Education Resources Information Center). Click on “ERIC” to go to the site.

“ERIC …is an internet-based digital library of education research and information sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education. ERIC provides access to bibliographic records of journal and non-journal literature indexed from 1966 to the present. ERIC also contains a growing collection of full-text materials in Adobe PDF format, including reports from the What Works Clearinghouse.” Articles go back to 1966. There is a wealth of information about health and rehabilitation as it pertains to education.

 

MDConsult

A convenient one-stop site of online books, journals, practice guidelines, drug information, and current topics in medicine. Journal articles are most often in full text.


MEDLINE  (Ovid)

Produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The premier source for bibliographic coverage of biomedical literature. Almost 14 million records from 4,800 journals are indexed and abstracted. From 1950 to the present.

                Ovid Tutorial from Duke University.

 

PSYCINFO.  Access through the Alvin Sherman Library’s Electronic Resources.
Coverage is from 1806 - Present. Indexes psychology and psychiatry articles from a variety of journals.  

 

ISI WEB OF KNOWLEDGE
The chief aim of this index is to provide access to related articles by indicating sources in which a known article by a given author has been cited. Over 3,300 journals are indexed. 

UpToDate  

A clinical reference that provides quick access to synthesized medical information in an easy-to-use format.

The Free Medical Journals Site is dedicated to the promotion of free access to medical journals over the Internet and lists only free journals. Arranged by specialty as well as by title/language.

 

HealthWeb : Nursing : Electronic Journals

This list from HealthWeb, the service which has links to web sites evaluated by librarians & information professionals, includes journals that provide full-text articles online.

 

HighWire Press -- Free Online Full-text Articles

From Stanford University Libraries, Highwire Press says it is "the largest archive of free full-text science on Earth!"  Many titles are in the fields of medicine and life sciences.

 

MEDLINE Journals with Links to Publisher Web Sites.

This is a list of the journals in MEDLINE for which publishers have provided links to their journal Web sites. Web-based journals usually contain the full-text of the original article, but this is not always the case. It varies by publisher and journal. Publishers may offer full text for a fee.

 

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.   

Published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition to full-text of articles, you may search MMWR publications from 1982-present. An interesting feature is interactive morbidity and mortality tables which may be found in the Disease Trends section.

 

NurseWeek (Online, free).

ISSN: 1063-2859. “Gannett Healthcare Group (publisher of Nurse.com, Nursing Spectrum, NurseWeek and Today in PT) is a nursing and healthcare communications company and the largest print and electronic publisher of news and information for registered nurses. “PubMed Central (PMC) is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature. All journals in PMC provide free access to full text (sometimes on a delayed basis).”

CINAHLsources. A highly useful page maintained by the database company. Comprises allied health, nursing, and many more medical fields. The nursing resources include advanced practice, nurse education, general and special topics, journals, websites of interest to nurses, organizations and associations, and resources for research.  

DMOZ Open Directory Project: Nursing.

Access to hundreds of international links to sites of interest to nurses including health conditions, senior health, the business of nursing, nursing associations, nursing journals, treatments, and a huge list of other relevant web sites numbering well over 3,500.

 

Hardin MD: Nursing.

A vast collection of resources for nursing personnel.

 

HealthWeb Nursing Page. Maintained by the Taubman Medical Library, University of Michigan. Links to sites relative to evidence-based nursing.

 

Health Statistics. Rutgers University’s Libraries offers a very good introduction to gathering health statistics on the web. An excellent place to begin research.

 

Internet’s Nursing Index, The.
Provides links to nursing boards in the UK, US and Canada. Good site for various nursing specialties. Touts itself as being the largest online community with as many as 500 topics discussed every day.

 

Martindale’s “Virtual” Nursing Center. Another site with a huge collection of resources, including intermediate and advanced nursing courses, nursing practice and protocols, nursing grand rounds and nursing cases, national boards and review questions, and an extra section of physical examination. A truly amazing set of resources.

MedWeb's Nursing Page. Under the auspices of Emory University. The site provides links to a variety of nursing organizations.

National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

Nursing Center. A portal to hundreds of nursing education activities and to more than fifty nursing journals.

Nursing Resources on the Web. Maintained by Humboldt State University Library. A one-stop shopping center for nurses with innumerable links to valuable sites including nursing directories, general nursing web-pages, nursing indexes, biomedical journal abbreviations, statistical resources for nurses, government resources both state (California) and federal, professional societies, a truly comprehensive list of nursing journals, listservs and discussion groups, statistical resources, and more. Almost overwhelming in its breadth.

Johns Hopkins’ Welch Library. One of the best pathfinders on nursing on the Internet.

 

Columbia University’s Health Sciences Library. Extremely well organized and comprehensive subject guide.

 

Penn State University Library. Fairly compact, but covers all of the bases.

 

The University of Delaware Library. Covers not only international nursing resources printed and electronic, but also includes a tutorial for CINAHL.

 

The University of Washington Library. Offers additional links to nursing web sites than those listed in NSU’s nursing pathfinder.

 

10. GOVERNMENT SOURCES

 

NLM Locator Plus. Coverage is from 1975 to the present. Produced by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and includes books, journals, and audiovisuals in the NLM collection. Also offers tutorials on how to best use the NLM resources. A link to MedlinePlus is also included. 

 

MedlinePlus. Incredible portal to all things medical. To get to nursing resources or specific topics use the search box at the top of the first page of the site. Includes such things as health topics, encyclopedias, dictionaries, drugs and supplements, directories, and other subjects.


National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). “NCSBN's programs and services include developing the NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® examinations, performing policy analysis and promoting uniformity in relationship to the regulation of nursing practice, disseminating data related to the licensure of nurses, conducting research pertinent to NCSBN's purpose, and serving as a forum for information exchange for members.”  

 

National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR). Nursing research and training programs, grants and funding opportunities, collaborative research projects, and minority research supplements.

 

GPO Access Browse Topics. Provides government information on broad topics such as health and education, food and drugs, grants and awards, science and technology, and social programs. Each category is then broken down to include details about federal regulations, programs, statistics, and much more.

 

National Institutes for Health. Gateway to a vast number of NIH health resources, including clinical trials, health hotlines, the site MedlinePlus. Other resources available at this site include grants and funding opportunities, research training, research training and scientific resources, and relevant government agency offices.

 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The mother lode of health information: diseases and conditions, drugs and foods , aging, safety and wellness, disasters and emergencies, families and children, grants and funding, including grants and funding and financial aid, governmental policies and regulations, and many other topics of relevance to nursing. In addition, there are links to other health-related agencies.

Association of Nurses in Aids Care (ANAC).
Founded in 1987 to address the specific needs of nurses working in HIV/AIDS, the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care has rapidly become a leader in the response to HIV disease and AIDS. Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN)
"AORN is the professional organization of perioperative registered nurses whose mission is to support registered nurses in achieving optimal outcomes for patients undergoing operative and other invasive procedures." AORN promotes quality patient care by providing its members with education, standards, services, and representation. AORN is composed of 40,000 perioperative registered nurses in approximately 6,700 hospitals and 3,500 ambulatory surgery centers in all 50 states and around the world.
