The role of the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of the Federal
government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), is to conduct
and support research that helps prevent and treat eye diseases and
other disorders of vision. Vision research is supported by the NEI
through research grants and training awards made to scientists at
medical centers, hospitals, universities, and other institutions
across the country and around the world. NEI also conducts public
and professional education programs. Useful resources on this site
include free publications, information on clinical studies,
research funding, news and events, as well as, an image gallery
and the NEIBank, a database of genes and proteins expressed in the
eye and visual system.
The purpose of the simulators is to teach medical students and
doctors how eye motion will change with pathology of the eye
muscles and cranial nerves and what to look for during a standard
neurological eye exam. The Neurological Eye Simulator (1999),
Virtual Patient and the Original Simulator (1997) were developed
at the University of California/Davis campus. Find more
information about the simulators and links to Quicktime and

The goal of this resource is to summarize the recent advances in
knowledge and understanding of the mammalian retina. The authors
describe a conceptual theory based on anatomical and
physiological investigations and on the actual pathways used by
neurons to code visual signals in the retina. Webvision also
contains movies and animations in Quicktime format. Most World
Wide Web browsers are not capable of displaying these movies.
The authors recommend uploading Netscape Communicator 4.0 (or
later versions) or a version of Microsoft Explorer that includes
Quicktime plug-ins in order to take advantage of WebVision.
