CIRCULATION POLICIES

Eligible Users:
The following are eligible users and may freely use all resources as enrolled students or faculty/staff at the Health Professions Division (HPD) or Nova Southeastern University (NSU):
  • Currently enrolled students at the Health Professions Division or Nova Southeastern University;
  • HPD and NSU Faculty and Staff;
  • HPD and NSU Adjunct Faculty;

Members of the general public, SEFLIN card holders and alumni may use the library and its collection. However, no items may circulate out of the library to the general public, to SEFLIN card holders, or to alumni.

Required Identification:
All HPD Students, Staff, and Faculty are issued an NSU photo identification badge. This photo ID badge also functions as a library card. In order to borrow materials from the HPD Library or to use materials maintained in the Reserve section patrons must present their valid NSU ID. A Driver's License is not considered to be valid library identification.

NSU non-HPD students, wishing to borrow materials from the Library or use the Reserve section must present a valid NSU photo identification card.

Members of the general public must present a valid Driver's License for the use of materials in the Reserve section. HPD Library Staff reserve the right to refuse to circulate materials if questionable photo identification is presented. The HPD Library may also request a present address and telephone number when circulating materials from the Reserve section. HPD students always have priority for use of Reserve materials.

Identification Responsibilities:
The library card holder is responsible for all items checked out on his/her respective patron record. If an item is lost, stolen, damaged, etc., the library card holder is responsible for the material's replacement cost. Under no circumstances is a photo identification and a library barcode transferable to another individual.

It is the sole responsibility of the card holder to immediately inform the library of a lost or stolen HPD identification badge. If the loss is reported immediately, the library will block transactions for the misplaced patron barcode, and a new one will be issued to the patron.

Renewals:
NSU and HPD students are permitted to renew an item a maximum of three times. HPD and NSU Faculty are permitted an unlimited number of renewals, while Adjunct Faculty are not permitted renewals. Library materials will not be renewed if a hold has been placed by another user.
To renew materials that are not overdue, are not on hold for someone else, or have not been renewed three times already, you may:

  1. Access your account information and renew items online.
    1. Go to the NovaCat web page here. You may also access NovaCat through NSU's main web page.  Go to http://www.nova.edu and click on Libraries and Research.  Then click on the NovaCat link to the left side of your screen.
    2. Click on "View your circulation record."
    3. Type in your name and University ID number (your NSU ID number).
    4. Place a checkmark in the box(es) of the item(s) you want to renew.
  2. Bring items to the HPD Library and renew them in person.
  3. Call the HPD circulation desk at (954) 262-3106 and renew items over the telephone.

Returns:
All library materials must be returned to the Health Professions Division Library. Patrons are encouraged to ensure that returned materials are properly checked in to avoid receiving overdue circulation notices.

Billed Items:
If a library user has not returned an item after receiving two notices, he/she will receive a third notice assuming that the material is lost. The third notice also notifies the library user that the HPD Library is including a replacement cost for the assumed lost item. If the item is lost, payment must be made to the Health Professions Division Library. Failure to pay may result in blocking of borrowing privileges. All outstanding charges must be paid before a student is allowed to graduate.

Hold/Recall:
If a library user requires materials which are checked out to another user, ask circulation to place a hold on the item. Upon return of the item, a notice will be mailed informing the requestor that the material will be held for him/her for one week.

If an item has been out for three or more weeks and is required immediately, a recall may be placed. A recall will notify the user who is in possession of the item and will request that the item be returned immediately. Holds and recalls must be placed in person at the Circulation Desk.

Confidentiality:
The Health Professions Division Library ascribes to the American Library Association's Code of Ethics. Information pertaining to patron records (address, items checked out, etc.) are considered confidential information and will only be communicated to a library user who requests to his/her own record.
