Online and Distance Student Participation

The majority of students within the College of Health Care Sciences are required to attend commencement. Exceptions to this rule are online and distance students, as noted in the Student Handbook. These students may opt to apply for their degree/diploma and have it shipped to them after they pay the $75 graduation fee. However, students wishing to attend the commencement activities must apply for the degree/diploma, and pay the $75 graduation fee, plus an additional $150. This additional fee helps to cover the costs associated with commencement, including the cost of caps and gowns, announcements, seating for two at the graduation dinner dance, etc. These students must fill in all of the online forms and return the Dinner Dance Response form, just like the students who are required to attend.

Please Note: In addition, online and distance students who wish to participate in commencement and/or the Senior Awards Dinner Dance, must send an email to Karen Batcho stating that they are planning to participate no later than Tuesday, June 15, 2010. Please place the words “Attendance at Commencement” in the subject line of the email. Include your name, N#, and the program you are attending. The deadline of June 15, 2010 is absolute – there will be no exceptions.

To Order Commencement Regalia and Announcements

August graduates may order their commencement regalia and announcements between June 1st and June 30th. Please click on the links above.

Hooding

Hooding is a tradition practiced by the Health Professions Division where a new graduate is welcomed into the profession by another member of that profession. In general, the Dean will be hooding each of the graduates.

However, if you have an immediate family member who is either on the faculty at Nova Southeastern University Health Professions Division or a graduate of a program that has the same degree you are about to receive, you have the option to have that family member hood you. We define an immediate family member as a spouse, mother, father, aunt, uncle, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister, brother, grandparent, son or daughter. That individual does not need academic regalia. He or she will be asked to come on to the stage at the appropriate time.

Students who wish to have a family member hood them within the Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Optometry, Medical Sciences and Dental Medicine, and the Physical Therapy Program in the College of Health Care Sciences, must fill in this form by April 15th. Students in the College of Health Care Sciences who will be attending the August graduation and who wish to have a family member hood them must fill in this form by July 15th.
