What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the scientific study of people at work. The goal of ergonomics is to reduce stress and eliminate injuries and disorders associated with the overuse of muscles, bad posture, and repeated tasks…—CDC, 2010, Ergonomics and Musculosketal Disorders, para. 1.

As an employer Nova Southeastern University (NSU) recognizes the importance of ergonomics. In addition, computers are here to stay! These are important tools that are used daily for various reasons; at home, on the go, in cellular phones, and on the job. To educate our community about OSHA's recommended neutral zone and neutral body positioning, NSU's Risk Management Office has developed a training tool. The office ergonomics training tool is designed to assist employees who are interested in expanding their knowledge about the importance of ergonomics. The module will instruct, along OSHA guidelines, on how to adapt the workstation, keyboard and keyboard accessories to the work done to create neutral body position.

Finally, this tool is designed to help reduce or eliminate workers' injuries due to repetitive motions, advice the user about keeping good ergonomic posture, and draw attention to issues such as (a) individual balance of typing v. reading while using the laptop/computer, (b) 'B' aware about the length of time spent using sight while typing, (c) 'B' aware about the total keyboard strokes used without taking a break, and (d) the importance of taking a break (exercise).
