The President’s Excellence in Community Service Award recognizes superior professional engagement activities in the community. The awards encourage the ongoing pursuit of community service and exemplify Nova Southeastern University’s “community” core value. Through these awards, NSU proclaims its pride in the accomplishments and personal dedication of its constituents (students, faculty, alumni and staff) in the community. These awards are conferred upon individuals (one in each category) who demonstrate significant contributions to the community while exemplifying all eight of NSU’s core values.
Student: A nominee must be currently enrolled at Nova Southeastern University as a student in good standing. He/she must provide community service efforts to the community-at-large.
Faculty: A nominee must be a full-time faculty member whose community outreach and engagement activities must be on the behalf of Nova Southeastern University and might be in the areas of community-based research, community clinical activities, community service and/or community events with students, and/or service learning.
Staff: A nominee must be a full-time staff member or a full-time administrator or an administrative faculty (more than 51% devoted to administrative duties). He/she must provide outstanding evidence of community service or outreach to the community-at-large as well as outstanding performance of his/her job duties.
Alumni: A nominee must hold a conferred degree from Nova Southeastern University. The graduate must demonstrate sustained leadership with the public and/or external organization(s) in addressing critical community concerns. He/she must provide evidence of the impact of the collective work on the target population(s).
Nominations may be made by colleagues, by any NSU constituent and may include self-nominations. The application packet must minimally include:
- A one-page narrative summary providing compelling evidence of the nominee’s excellence in community engagement/service. The summary must indicate which of the four awards is being sought (student, alumni, faculty or staff).
- A current resume or curriculum vita
- Support letter(s) from community affiliate and/or peer faculty member and/or student, etc, attesting to the nominee’s community activities
The application must be submitted to the Office of Institutional and Community Engagement firstname.lastname@example.org or Dr. Packer-Muti, Nova Southeastern University 3301 College Avenue Fort Lauderdale, Fl 33314 on or before November 09, 2012.
The award decision recommendations will be made by peer-committees, as follows:
Student Award: A committee comprised of Student Affairs representatives, faculty club/service organization advisors, and students.
Faculty Award: A committee comprised of faculty members of the NSU Faculty Advisory Council.
Staff Award: A committee comprised of staff and administrators from an array of NSU’s units with large numbers of staff members as well as representatives from the Office of Human Resources.
Alumni Award: A committee comprised of members of the President’s Advisory Council, which is comprised of NSU alumni.
The final decision will be made by Nova Southeastern University’s President on or before December 16, 2012. The final awardees in each category will be honored at the annual Celebration of Excellence.
