Survey Reports

Community Outreach
Nova Southeastern University goes beyond its primary mission of providing school and university curricula by reaching out to the community with diverse service and clinical programs, community-based research and resources. NSU ranks third among all private colleges nationally in the percentage of federal work-study dollars that it devotes to community service according to researchers at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

Carnegie Foundation Elective Category of Community Engaged
Nova Southeastern University earned the Carnegie Foundation prestigious category as a community engaged higher education institution in January 2010. NSU earned this recognition through a rigorous process that included a self-study submission. NSU was awarded the community engaged designation in both categories, "Curricular Engagement" and in "Outreach and Partnerships". A complete definition of each is provided below:
To demonstrate curricular engagement, institutions were asked to describe teaching, learning, and scholarly activities that engage faculty, students, and the community in mutually beneficial and respectful collaboration, address community-identified needs, deepen students' civic and academic learning, enhance the well-being of the community, and enrich the scholarship of the institution.
To demonstrate outreach and partnerships, they were asked to describe two related approaches to community engagement: first, the provision of institutional resources for community use in ways that benefited both the campus and the community and second, collaborations and faculty scholarship that constituted a beneficial exchange, exploration, discovery, and application of knowledge, information, and resources. The requirements of both sections, when met, describe an institution deeply engaged with its community.

The Physician Assistant Program hosts outreach activities in rural and urban communities in Florida, as well as in Peru and Guatemala.
Physical therapy and occupational therapy students treat developmentally challenged children.
The Audiology Clinic provides hearing and balance services to the community.

Instilling a sense of personal and civic responsibility in students is something University School takes seriously. Our students learn the value of helping others, and you see that spirit at work at every age level. From packing goods for earthquake victims, writing letters to those serving in the armed forces, or collecting toys for underprivileged children, University School students and faculty put their hearts into helping others.
At University School, we recognize the importance of being a responsible and contributing member of our community. In fact, to graduate, Upper School students must earn 100 hours of community service. However, for most of our students, that service becomes much more than a graduation requirement. Last year's graduating class devoted over 100,000 volunteer hours during their high school years.

The Division of Clinical Operations oversees the administration and oversight of the University's 20 different health care centers in Miami-Dade and Broward county's. Offering University health care services to the community, some not available elsewhere, and community outreach programs in the form of free health care education and assessments for vision, medical, speech, and behavior health. physical and occupational therapy and dental services.
