Families, friends, and the general public are cordially invited to attend commencement. Tickets are not required but seating is limited and large groups of guests wishing to sit together should arrive early.

The arena doors open one hour prior to the published start time of the ceremony for both candidates and guests. Because seating is limited, plan accordingly.

Be aware that the arena doors will temporarily close to guests during the opening processional and the playing of The Star Spangled Banner, and reopen afterwards on a space-available basis.

Please Note: Due to the size of the Arena at the Don Taft University Center and as a courtesy to all candidates and their guests, the saving of seats is strictly prohibited.

Family members (other than your spouse and children) wishing to visit for commencement must apply for a tourist visa at the U.S. Embassy or consulate in their home countries.

Ensure that your family members have the following evidence, which will be helpful during the visa application process:

  • Invitation letter from you (Write a letter of invitation using the provided template that includes your name, your reason for living in the United States, the names of your family members who wish to visit, the purpose and approximate length of the visit, and whether you will provide Food and Housing or any other financial assistance for the visit).
  • Your evidence of funding (If you provide Food and Housing or any other specific expenses for the trip, such as airfare, you should supply evidence of your funding, e.g., bank statement or employment letter. There is no minimum dollar amount that you must reflect, but you should indicate an amount that is reasonable for the level of support you are providing).
  • Evidence of your status in the United States (Provide your family members with a copy of your I-20 - NOT THE ORIGINAL - and other documents verifying your status in the U.S.).
  • Evidence of intent to return home (Your family members must provide that they will return home after visiting the United States. Documents showing employment, property ownership, close family relations in their home country, or enrollment in school in the home country are considered good evidence of intent to return home).
  • Family members' evidence of funding (If your family members indent to cover their own expenses, they should provide a bank statement, employment verification, or other evidence of funding).

The U.S. State Department/Bureau of Consular Affairs hosts a website (www.travel.state.gov) with additional information about applying for a tourist visa. In addition, many individual consulates, websites have more specific information about inviting family members.
