Please find below information regarding career assessment and career track planning that will help you learn more about majors at NSU, careers associated with them, and how to develop an action plan to move towards them.

Career Assessment

Career Services provides various assessments which students can take to identify their career interests, preferred work environments, and how to make decisions about career choices.

Paper-Based Assessments:

  • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a self-report, personality inventory. It can be used to help individuals identify preferred work environments, roles, and functions. A typical appointment will include orientation to services and assessment taking with a follow-up appointment with your career consultant to discuss results.

  • The Strong Interest Inventory assesses a person’s interests in a variety of areas. Additionally, the inventory profiles responses as to what professions the person has similar interests to, as well as provides information about his/her interests and their relationship to the world of work. A typical appointment will include orientation to services and assessment taking with a follow-up appointment with your career consultant to discuss results.

Internet-Based Assessments:

  • www.CareerKey.org is an online version of the Self-Directed-Search (SDS).
    This enables students the opportunity to learn more about their values, career interests, and how they match with career fields out in the world of work. This site provides in depth information on many career fields and what it takes to succeed in them.

  • SIGI-PLUS is an online career guidance program that can help evaluate values, interests, and activities to provide information about yourself and careers that may be of interest to you. Click on "Career Resources" to find SigiPlus.

  • eCHOICES is another online career guidance program that connects you with interest and work values assessment with connections to possible careers. eCHOICES also provides information on undergraduate and graduate programs, school information, and scholarship/grant opportunities.

Career Track Planning

Your future career opportunities and choices are affected by the planning you do now. Completing a successful collegiate experience and managing a lifetime of career challenges do not just happen -they are planned! The Office of Career Services offers you the opportunity to plan for professional growth and create successful career outcomes. Meeting with a career consultant and developing a plan of action will allow you to make successful career decisions.

Many students enter college with career goals however; the pressure of completing course requirements can sometimes impede the career-planning process. The following career plan is provided to you by Career Services in order to help you plan for a successful future:

Freshman Year

  • I have participated in the Career Services Orientation programs during new student orientation.
  • I have visited Career Services and familiarized myself with the available services.
  • I have begun to develop an academic record of excellence. Consistent class attendance predicts academic success. Students with high grade point averages typically create more post-graduation options for themselves.
  • I have taken the time to make a positive adjustment into my new life at Nova Southeastern University.
  • I have invested time in making friends, connecting with peers and mentors, getting to know the University and its resources, and mastering academic demands.
  • I have utilized faculty and academic advisors to get feedback and to plan for academic success.
  • I have participated in Career Awareness Week events and programs.
  • I have contacted the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development to find out about how to join a social or pre-professional club or organization of my interest.
  • I have explored volunteer opportunities. Volunteerism is one way to begin to develop my resume.
  • I have met with a career consultant to explore careers/majors and have utilized SIGIPLUS, an interactive values, skills, and interest assessment.
  • I have found out about the internship and co-op program for future exploration following my freshman year.
  • I have developed a winning resume with my career consultant, which will be updated, as my experiences and skills increase.
  • I have registered with e-Recruiting in order to receive information on jobs, internships, and local/national job fairs.

Sophomore Year

  • I have met with my career consultant and explored Career Services and its website to get to know their services, workshop schedules and special events.
  • I have met with my academic advisor to plan an academic schedule consistent with my goals and academic major.
  • I have begun to work with my career consultant on the initial research into my career fields of interest and/or those related to my major.
  • I have learned about co-op and internship opportunities available to me.
  • I have participated in Career Awareness Week, Career Expo, and other career-related events.
  • I have considered running for a leadership position within residential life, clubs, or organizations on campus or in the community. Effective leadership is a skill highly sought after by employers.
  • I have worked with my career consultant to identify a mentor within the NSU community.
  • I have been approved to apply for an internship/co-op position in my field of study.
  • I have continue to power up my resume and have had it reviewed by my career consultant.
  • I have registered for the Personal Career Development class for the Fall Semester of my junior year.

Junior Year

  • I have attended the required interviewing and job search workshops by Career Services.
  • I have met with my career consultant to discuss how to identify key areas of interest and research current market trends in that area.
  • I have met with my career consultant to update my resume/CV, cover letter, and reference page. My resume includes related experience, demonstrated leadership skills, major and specialization when applicable, volunteer activities, and computer/language skills.
  • I have registered with e-Recruiting in order to receive information on jobs, internships, and local/national job fairs
  • I have attended workshops to improve my job search and salary negotiating skills.
  • I have attended career fairs and networking events to build my network of contacts and to learn about current employment opportunities.
  • I have secured an internship, practicum, rotation, or other related experience to gain professional experience and to increase my marketability.
  • I have joined a pre-professional student association.
  • I have built strong, personal relationships with classmates, faculty, administrators, alumni and prominent practitioners in my field.
  • I have read at least one career related book that my career consultant recommended.
  • I have attended the Career Services etiquette dinner and Dress for Success workshop.
  • I have met with my career consultant to decide between graduate school and full-time employment upon graduation.
  • I have attended the Applying for Graduate School Program offered by Career Services.
  • I have participated in Career Awareness Week, Career Expo, and other career-related events.
  • I have continued to demonstrate academic success within my major and in other coursework.
  • I have talked to my faculty advisor and career consultants to explore career possibilities and networking opportunities.
  • I have considered running for a leadership position within residential life, clubs, or organizations on campus or in the community. Effective leadership is a skill highly sought after by employers.

Senior Year

  • I have met with my career consultant and identified industries and employers that I would like to work for and developed strategies to target them.
  • I have powered up my resume and cover letter and have had my career consultant review them.
  • I have attended annual and local conventions, conferences, and networking events of professional associations.
  • I have developed a faculty mentor and have requested additional advice on graduate school and my chosen career.
  • I have applied for and taken the required entrance exams for graduate school.
  • I have continued to improve my job search, self-marketing and interviewing skills by participating in various Career Services workshops.
  • I have taken the opportunity to participate in a mock interview with my career consultant.
  • I have participated in Career Expo, campus recruiting sessions, and other employer visits.
