What is ELP

The Experiential Learning Program is a planned progressive educational program that provides for the integration of a student's academic studies and relative work experience in a professional environment. The program is a three-way partnership between the employer, the student, and the University. In order for the program to be successful, there must be a clear understanding of the role of each partner, as well as a firm commitment to the program. NSU's Experiential Learning Program adheres to the parallel model of part-time paid work and full-time study.

How Can you Benefit as an ELP Employer?
  • A co-op/intern provides valuable student employees who are motivated to exceed working requirements.

  • A co-op/intern provides the employer with an opportunity to preview potential full-time employees in actual work situations.

  • A co-op/intern provides visibility and a positive image on campus to enhance employer-college relations.

  • A co-op/intern is a vehicle for employer input into the academic preparation of college graduates.

Advantages of a Co-op/internship Through Career Services

  • Career Services already has a vested interest in educating students about why relevant work experience is so necessary.

  • No duplication of efforts by NSU staff in developing corporate contacts.

  • Provides employers with “one-stop-shopping” and consistency.

How is a Co-op/internship Set Up?

Once you have determined your employment needs, contact Career Services to:

  • Set up an employer account online to post your available co-op/intern positions.

  • Indicate the period(s) your organization wishes to employ a co-op student(s)—Fall/Spring/Summer.

  • State your preferred method for interviewing applicants and if you are interested in participating in on-campus-recruiting.

  • Provide Career Services with information about your organization.

What's Next?

  • Review and sign the Employer Agreement indicating your organization will assume responsibility for the student's supervision during the work period.

  • Provide students with a reasonable orientation and training period and define what responsibilities the co-op/intern student(s) will have.

  • Employers will receive a telephone inquiry or site visit from a Career Services staff member.

  • Agree to complete the Employer Evaluation at the end of the student's co-op/intern experience.
