Student Internship / Co-op Procedures

The Internship/Co-op Program is a planned progressive educational program that provides for the integration of a student's academic studies and relative work experience in a professional environment. The Internship/Co-op Program is a three-way partnership between the employer, the student, and the University. In order for the program to be successful, there must be a clear understanding of the role of each partner, as well as a firm commitment to the program. NSU's Internship/Co-op Program adheres to the parallel model of part-time work and full-time study.

  1. Visit your academic advisor to make sure you are eligible to participate in the internship/co-op program

    • Students need a cumulative GPA of a 2.5 or higher.

    • Students must have completed a minimum of 36 academic credit hours.

    • Students must agree to work 10-20 hours per week during a 16-week semester.

    • Students must apply and be approved to participate in the internship program one semester before they begin to get full credit.

    • Students can participate in an internship a maximum of two semesters

  2. Once you are approved to participate in the Internship/Co-op Program by your advisor, take the Co-op/Internship Request form to Career Services.

  3. Career Services must approve and sign-off on your Internship/Co-op site.

    • If you do not currently have an Intership/Co-op site, Career Services will assist you in this process

    • The Internship/Co-op position must be related to your field of study

    • Effective Spring 2002, students cannot hold an Internship/Co-op position within an organization that they are currently employed with.

    • Students may not use work-study employment as intern/co-op site.

  4. Once your Internship/Co-op position has been approved, you will be referred back to your Advisor for assignment of a faculty sponsor.
