The NSU Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. Every year, each school and center at NSU recognizes an outstanding alumnus who has achieved an outstanding record of distinction and accomplishment in his or her field or community. The awards are presented to each award winner by the dean of their prospective school or center during the University's premier event, the Celebration of Excellence. The 2009 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awards will be presented at the 12th Annual Celebration of Excellence, Thursday, January 21, 2010.
To nominate an NSU alumnus or yourself for the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award simply complete the form and return it along with a professional resume and any additional information you wish to include to: NSU, NSU Alumni Association, Attn Sara DuCuennois, 3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314-7796. All nominations must be received by September 8, 2009.

Lynn Brown, Ed.D. ’06, is currently the principal of Jacob Shapiro Brain Based Instruction Laboratory School in Oshkosh, WI. After the 2nd year of charter school implementation, it has seen tremendous results in student achievement. This past year the school was nominated for the Wisconsin Charter School of the Year as well as Wisconsin Innovator or the Year. |

| Vanessa Carter, B.S. ’96, freelances as a translator from English to Spanish or Spanish to English. |

Jessica Foley, Ph.D. ‘07, has received a joint faculty appointment in neuropsychology at Harvard Medical School and the Boston VA Healthcare System. Her work will include conducting research in neuroimaging of neurodegenerative conditions of aging. Foley completed her internship at Brown Medical School. Upon graduating, Dr. Foley completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UCLA. Foley will also supervise neuropsychology interns and doctoral students in clinical psychology at the Boston Consortium, providing training on white matter degeneration and sub-cortical dementia. |

Heather Halter, MS ’04 - Heather’s interest in the EndangeredSpecies Act listing process prompted her to apply to law school to become an environmental attorney, so she entered the University Of Florida Levin College Of Law in 2004. After graduating in 2007, she was awarded a John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship and moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Heather is currently a NMFS employee in the Endangered Species Division, Office of Protected Resources. Her interests continue to be Endangered Species and Marine Protected Area issues, especially in the international realm. |

| Michele Hill, Ed.D.’06, recently married to David O'Brien on July 28, 2009 in Jamaica. Michele is currently serving on the Governor Mifflin School Board.

| Dr. D. Bonnette Jones, M.B.A. ’09, is President and CEO of Ask Dr. Jones Educational Mentor Services. She is a professional educator who has the academic and practical ability, skill, background, and expertise to make a measurable difference in her children’s lives. |
|
| After graduation, Alberto Marinas, M.B.A. ’05, began working with an automotive company. He was able to travel to France, Italy and Monaco with a college friend. When the company downsized, he traveled to China and got a job teaching English. Marinas has been teaching for the past six months and travels in his free time. Currently he is working on a new business opportunity, and credits his NSU education and training as a US Marine which have allowed him to not only to adapt to new situations, but to succeed. |

| Dr. Benita Noiel-Ashford, Ed.D. ’07, was elected as President of Board for the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. Dr. Ashford is the first to hold the prestigious title in Dallas ISD. |

Roberta Stanley, J.D. ’83 has been selected for inclusion in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the area of Family Law. She is currently employed with Brinkley, Morgan, Solomon, Tatum, Stanley & Lunny, LLP and is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) as well as President of the Florida Chapter. She is also a Fellow in the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (IAML). Ms. Stanley practices exclusively family law, handling complex dissolution of marriage cases, intricate prenuptial agreements and other family-related matters. |

| Debra A. Smith D.O. ‘93, MIHM, MBA, FACPM, FACOPM, FAIHQ has written “Healthcare Solved: Real Answers, No Politics (ISBN: 978-0-557-09032-7)” a book for the citizen consumer, healthcare professional and employer who asks, "What is health reform going to mean for me?" As both a physician and economist, Dr. Smith plainly lays out the problems and gives workable solutions. With clinical and administrative experience, Dr. Smith has worked in every area of healthcare, from hospitals to insurance companies. She has seen what's worked and what hasn't in the United States, Europe and the Third World. |
