Alumni Show Their Shark Spirit at Annual Men’s Soccer MatchAlumni Show Their Shark Spirit at Annual Men’s Soccer Match

More than 25 alumni were in attendance on April 4th for the annual event. Held at the NSU Soccer Complex, and hosted by the Men’s Soccer Program, the Sharks soccer team took on the alumni. The score finished 6-3 to the current squad, their first win in 5 years. There was an after-party hosted by alumnus Christian Goffi, where even more alumni mixed and mingled with their former teammates. Next year’s date is tentatively scheduled save the date for April 10th, 2010, so pencil it in!

A Global Celebration of the Arts

On Tuesday, April 28, Nova Southeastern University’s Alumni Association and the Fischler School of Education and Human Services presented A Global Celebration of the Arts - an exhibition and performances by students and alumni from the Fischler School’s interdisciplinary arts graduate program:  Melissa Axel, M.S., ’06—piano and vocals; Kailin Yong—violin; Nathan Markham—visual art. NSU friends and family gathered at the Performance Theater at the Don Taft University Center for a truly entertaining evening.


Tampa Comedy NightTampa Comedy Night

More than 40 alumni joined the Tampa Alumni Chapter on Friday, May 8th, for a night of fun and laughs at Side Splitters Comedy Club. Guests enjoyed the comedic stylings of Mark Klein, who has appeared on A&E’s Comedy on the Road, CBS, NBC, and Showtime’s Comedy Club Network.

NSU’s Law, MIBA, and MBA Alumni Chapters hosted the 3rd Annual Tri-County Area Networking Event at the Riverside Hotel on May 13, 2009.  Over 200 NSU Alumni from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties met for an evening of networking and camaraderie and honored Dean Randy Pohlman from the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business & Entrepreneurship and Dean Athornia Steele from the Shepard Broad Law School for their service and dedication to Nova Southeastern University.

On Friday, May 15, the NSU Motor City Alumni Chapter met for its 2nd Annual Networking Happy Hour at the legendary Post Bar, Novi. Alumni and their guests enjoyed an evening of food, drinks and fun.

NSU Night at the Tampa Bay Devil Rays

NSU Alumni, family and friends met for this second annual sell-out event on Friday, May22 at Landshark Stadium. More than 700 attendees mixed and mingled at the pre-game tailgate reception and then cheered on the Florida Marlins as they took on last year’s World Series runner ups, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Dr. Kenneth Caves, Ed.D. ’76, is celebrating 38 years of working in Labor Relations, the last 29 as owner of CAVES & ASSOCIATES representing school districts, cities, counties and special districts in labor relations.


Billie Jo Kaufman J.D.'90, associate dean for Library & Information Resources and professor of law at American University Washington College of Law, will be a guest speaker and moderator at the Conference on Legal Information and Law Libraries in Beijing, China.  The Conference will be an opportunity for legal information professionals from both the U.S. and China to share experiences and exchange views in regard to legal information development and law library management.   Associate Dean Kaufman's presentation will be on Friday, May 29, and will be part of a session focusing on the digitization of legal information resources.  She will also moderate a panel on Saturday, May 30, on the challenges facing libraries in regard to the acquisition, distribution, and preservation of legal materials.


Robert McCormes-Ballou, M.S. ’06, Director, Supply Chain Diversity, Office Depot, is to be honored at the 12th Annual 40 Under Forty Achievement Awards Dinner, Thursday, June 18, 2009.This milestone event, Reaching for Higher Goals, will be hosted by Shon Gables and Randal D. Pinkett, Ph.D. 40 Under Forty began in 1997 to recognize the next generation of African-American leaders who, with a commitment to the development of their communities, are exceptional performers in their professions. Deborah Rubens, M.S. ’95, was elected to the Board of Directors of The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI), during the Association’s Annual Conference in Atlanta in April. She will serve as At-Large Director from 2009-2010. Rubens has a 20+ year professional background in human resources, focused in the healthcare industry and is currently the Director of Human Resources for Shriners Hospitals for Children in Northern California and chairs the Corporate Training team.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Social Work from The Florida State University; Master of Science from Nova Southeastern University; and is certified as a Senior Human Resource Professional with California certification and is certified as a trainer/facilitator through Achieve Global, Center for Leadership Studies and DDI.


Erin Weston, O.D. ’07 will celebrate her one year anniversary in business this August. She practices full-scope optometry with an emphasis on contact lenses at her privately owned office and optical in Boca Raton, FL. She currently resides in Delray Beach with her husband of 6 years.
