Eye Care Institute’s Spring Style ShowSpring Optical Style Show

The Eye Care Institute at the College of Optometry will be having a Spring Style Show on April 1, 2009, from 12 – 8 p.m. This event will take place at the Davie Optical located on the second floor of the Sanford Ziff Building.

The event will showcase the full collection of sunglasses and frames from designer brands such as Marc Jacobs, Jimmy Choo, Dior, Valentino, Giorgio Armani, Gucci and Juicy Couture. Stylists will be on hand to provide personal consultations.

There will be a 25 percent discount on the purchase of all frames and lenses for students, faculty, employees, friends and family. Outside prescriptions will be accepted. Additionally, an extra five percent discount on optical purchases will be given to those who receive an eye exam at any of the The Eye Care Institute locations March 1 - April 1.

The Style Show will include refreshments, prizes, giveaways and a grand prize.

On Thursday, October 30th members of the Tampa Alumni Chapter joined for an event at SideBern’s, a South Tampa premiere location. Alumni enjoyed great food, drinks, and conversation on a beautiful fall Tampa evening.


Manhattan Alumni Chapter Inaugural Holiday Party
On Thursday, December 11, 2008, Dr. Alden Cass hosted an inaugural holiday party featuring his extensive network of professionals from a variety of fields including mental health, finance, law, media, medical, nutrition, and publishing. Manhattan Alumni in attendance met new contacts and enjoyed appetizers and drinks!


Alumni Reception at The Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale
Local NSU alumni and friends gathered on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, for a reception at the exquisite The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Resort in Fort Lauderdale.   Alumni enjoyed the gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean while networking with fellow alumni over drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

Alumni Reception at the Blue Martini City Place
More than a dozen West Palm Beach alumni and friends gathered for a reception on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at the Blue Martini City Place in West Palm Beach. Guest enjoyed delicious tapas and spirits, while meeting new NSU friends.

Eastern NY Alumni Chapter 2nd Annual Holiday Party
On Sunday, December 7, 2008, New York alumni gathered for a warm holiday evening at the beautiful home of Chapter President, Dr. Corbett, in Amityville, New York. Alumni enjoyed great wine and wonderful cuisine while rejoicing the holiday and mingling with fellow alumni.


Orlando Alumni Chapter Kick-off
NSU kicked-off the newest addition to the NSU Alumni Association, the Orlando Alumni Chapter, with a middle of Universal Orlando Resort. New members were welcomed by Vice President Joanne Ferchland Parella. The group enjoyed delicious drinks, hors d’oeuvres and of course, NSU camaraderie. Salvador Dali Alumni Reception
More than 30 NSU alumni and friends toured the Dear Max, Dear Friend exhibit featuring the artwork of surrealist painter Salvador Dali at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and IT Center on Wednesday, December 3, 2008. Attendees enjoyed food and drinks, and the unique opportunity to see artwork and memorabilia of Dali, from the Dr. Maxwell and Anne Maltz collection, whose philanthropy helped create NSU’s Maxwell Maltz Building.

NSU Alumni Reception at The Havana Club
On Tuesday, December 2, 2008, south Florida NSU alumni gathered for a reception at The Havana Club at the top of the Wachovia Financial Center in the heart of Miami. Less than 200 miles from the city of Havana, attendees enjoyed Cuban inspired drinks and hors d’oeuvres overlooking the beautiful Biscayne Bay.

In Memoriam

Jamie H. Marcus, B.A.Jamie H. Marcus, B.A., 2008, passed away on September 28, 2008, from medical complications. Jamie, a resident of New York City, New York, was temporarily living in North Carolina after graduating from Nova, and working for a law firm at the time of his death. Friends interested in sharing their thoughts about Jamie may visit his website. Anyone wishing to contact Jamie’s family, please use the following email address: Seacoastv1@aol.com.

Troy C. Henson, Ed.S., 2007, passed away on August 15, 2008. Henson was 34 years old and a middle school band director. He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma on July 17, 2007, and after a year long battle and the first of two stem cell transplants, he lost the fight but won the battle. During his last full year of teaching in Gwinnett County in 2006-2007, he completed his Education Specialist degree at Nova Southeastern University and participated in Gwinnet County Chambers Teachers as Leaders program. The year prior he received the honor of Teacher of the Year at Pinckneyville Middle School. He went out “on top" prior to his disability while fighting this dreadful disease.

Alumni Spotlight

Leo Archambault, D.B.A., 2009, presented a paper at an international conference in Khon Kaen, Thailand November 2008. The conference was the EDU-COMM 2008 sponsored by Edith Cowan University.


Rosalind Trimble Bailey, Ed.D., 2008, has been appointed Director of the Training and Organizational Development Division for the U.S. General Services Administration effective January 4, 2009. Bailey leads a team of Organizational Development Specialists that serves the agencies nearly 12,000 employees and 3,000 contract employees nationwide. She is responsible for several agency-wide programs including the Advanced Leadership Development Program, the Leadership for New Supervisors program, the National Mentoring Program, New Employee Celebration program, administering the Workforce Engagement Survey, and managing the GSA Online University.


Anita Sugimura Holsapple, M.S., 2007, a graduate of the master’s program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, is the creator and executive producer of a documentary entitled Mental Valor. Mental Valor is dedicated to the men and women in the military and their families. The film explores the issues that impact veterans and their families. Holsapple has spent more than thirteen years as a television news producer and reporter. This is her first film.


Joanne Kuzman, Ph.D., 2007, is currently working as a senior Lecturer at the University of Worchester in the UK.


Moises J. Pineda, M.B.A., 2007, has been an Agent with New York Life Insurance Company, as of November 21, 2008 and went full-time December 15, 2008. He is also a member of the Doral Chamber of Commerce, and holds the Communications Coordinator position with Best Buddies Business Networking - Broward Chapter. Pineda received his health insurance license on January 6, 2009 in order to expand his product offerings.


Orlando Ramos, Ed.D., 2007, has just won the California Peace Prize awarded by the California Wellness Foundation. This award is given to 3 Californians every year, along with a $25,000 check for their ideas and implementation of violence reduction strategies. He received the award for advocating using our public schools to remain open until late in the evening and have social services, doctors, lawyers, mental health professions use the building after the school day is done to better serve their respective communities. The intent is to have the school building become the focal point of the community. He is currently the Principal of Lee Mathson Middle School in San Jose, CA.


Gregory M. Vecchi, Ph.D., 2007, a graduate of the doctoral program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, was the featured speaker at a colloquium hosted by the Center for Psychological Studies and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) on Jan. 16, 2009. Vecchi’s topic was “Global Hostage-Taking Research and Analysis Program: An Update.” Vecchi was recently named the unit chief of the Behavioral Science Unit at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. He was selected by SHSS in 2008 as its alumnus of the year and was one of the honorees last year at NSU’s Celebration of Excellence.


Howard Rechtmann, M.I.B.A., 2006, has been promoted to the grade of GS-12 effective January 4, 2009. He was awarded the Presidential Management Fellow in 2007 and is in the second year of that appointment. He will finish the fellowship at the end of 2009 and be reappointed to a federal career post.


Noema Santos, M.S., 2006, teaches accounting and finance at Manatee Community College, Bradenton Campus. She also serves as adviser to the Bradenton Chapter of Phi Beta Lamda, a student run business organization.


Wayne A. Brown, Ph.D., 2005, has joined Excelsior College as vice president of information technology. Brown oversees Excelsior's distance learning technology systems, strategic planning and day-to-day information operations at the Columbia Circle headquarters, with 400 on-site employees and more than 30,000 students nationwide. Brown holds a doctorate in computing technology in education from Nova Southeastern University. Most recently he served as executive vice president of administration and chief information officer at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. He earned his bachelor's degree and master's degree in business administration from Wayland Baptist University. He holds three associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force, and during his 20-year military career he was recognized as the U.S. Air Force Air Mobility Command Medical Information Systems Officer of the Year.


Raquel C. Escudero, B.S., 2005, M.S., 2008, just gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Dayana Elisa. Her husband is also an NSU Graduate, Michael Escudero, Pharm.D., 2007. This is their first child.


Jeff G. Konin, Ph.D., 2004, Associate Professor and Executive Director of the Sports Medicine & Athletic Related Trauma Institute at the University of South Florida in Tampa, has been appointed Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at USF.


Randall Palmer, Ed.S., 2003, has been named “2008 New Jersey Educator of the Year” by the Association of Schools and Agencies for the Handicapped (ASAH).


Marie Borrazzo, Ph.D., 2002 & M.B.A., 1996, recently published her latest book, Call Me Madame President: A narrative outlining the journey of confronting and overcoming childhood trauma by B.E .M., Ph.D.


Sandra E. Krumbein, J.D., 2002, has been appointed partner with the law firm Ruden McClosky. A member of the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group, Krumbein specializes in real estate acquisition and development, condominium and homeowner association operation and serves as counsel to condominium and homeowner associations. She represents developers statewide and counsels clients in residential and commercial real estate transactions. Krumbein is also experienced in defending developer clients against claims involving the Interstate Land Sales Full Disclosure Act (ILSA) and the Florida Condominium Act, teaming with her developer clients in all aspects of purchase and sales contract enforcement issues.

Krumbein earned her law degree from Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center (J.D., summa cum laude, 2002), and is a graduate of Columbia University School of Social Work (M.S., 1992) and New York University (B.A., cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, 1988). While in law school, she was an Associate Editor and member of the Nova Law Review. She is admitted to The Florida Bar and is a member of the Broward County Bar Association and The Florida Bar Condominium and Planned Development Committee of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section.

Krumbein co-authored a chapter on condominium conversions in The Florida Bar's treatise, Florida Condominium Law and Community Association Law (2007 edition) and has lectured numerous times for the University of Miami Institute on Condominium and Cluster Developments and for The Florida Bar on various condominium development issues.


Stanley Zamor, M.S., 2002, a graduate of the master’s program in Conflict Analysis and Resolution and a current doctoral student in the program was one of fifteen people chosen to become a part of the Broward County Emerging Cultural Leaders program. In addition, last month Zamor was appointed to the ArtServe Board of Directors. ArtServe serves the business and administrative needs of artists and nonprofit organizations in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.


Javier Delgado, J.D., 2001,Merlin Law Group, a firm specializing in insurance law, is pleased to announce the addition of attorney Javier Delgado to its Houston office. Prior to joining Merlin, Delgado represented policyholders for another firm. Before that, he worked on behalf of insurers—first as an adjuster and then at an insurance defense litigation firm in South Florida. In his history representing policyholders (both residential and commercial), Delgado has successfully resolved over 300 claims, ranging from $7500 homeowner claims to multi-million dollar settlements for condominium boards. Delgado received a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida International University and his Juris Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. He is a member of the American Bar Association Tort, Trial, and Insurance Section; American Bar Association, Construction Law Section and Florida Real Property Section. Delgado was admitted into the Florida Bar in 2002 and the Texas Bar in 2008.


Althia Ellis, M.P.A., 2000, is the president of Thompsom-Ellis Consulting, LLC, a Davie, Florida small business providing professional writing, editing, training and consulting services.


Debi Chalik, J.D., 1999, co-founding partner of the personal injury law firm of Chalik & Chalik, has been certified as a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Recognized as one of the most prestigious groups of trial lawyers in the United States, membership in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum is limited to attorneys who have won million and multi-million dollar verdicts, awards and settlements. The organization was founded in 1993 and there are approximately 3000 members located throughout the country. Less than one percent of U.S. lawyers are members. Forum membership acknowledges excellence in advocacy, and provides members with a national network of experienced colleagues for professional referral and information exchange in major cases. Originally, from Montreal, Canada, Chalik obtained her undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from York University in Toronto, Canada. She then moved to South Florida where she earned her J.D. from Nova Southeastern Law School.


Mary Charbonneau, O.D., 1999, After the birth of her first child, Allison Elizabeth, her husband received orders from the U.S. Navy to go to Rota, Spain. The family arrived in Spain on December 8, 2008 and will be there for three years. They are excited about the opportunity to learn about Spanish culture and improve their language skills. Mary was honored at the Nova Southeastern Celebration of Excellence on January 22, 2009.


Steven W. Marcus, J.D., 1999, The law firm of Ruden McClosky is pleased to announce that Steven W. Marcus has been appointed partner. A member of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group, Marcus represents clients in multiple areas of business and commercial litigation, including large and small corporations in various industries, developers and property owners. Marcus earned his law degree from Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center (J.D., cum laude, 1999), and is a graduate of the University of South Florida (M.A., summa cum laude, 1995 and B.A., 1990). While at law school, he served as a senior staff member of the Nova Law Review and participated in Nova's Alternative Dispute Resolution internship program. He is a member of The Florida Bar and is admitted to practice before the Northern, Middle and Southern Districts of Florida, and before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Marcus currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), South Florida Chapter, where he actively participates in the recruitment of corporate sponsors and fund-raising events. He is also a member of the Broward County Bar Association and the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce.


Jenny R. Sholer, J.D., 1999, has two children, a six-year-old son, Noah and a two-year-old daughter, Ella.


Julieta Rovi, M.B.A., 1998, has just published her first handbook in Spanish. It is called “Como elaborar un plan de negocios” (How to prepare a business plan). It is available for loan at Panama’s National Library (Biblioteca nacional), at the Panama Canal Ascanio Arosemena Library, and soon it will be available for purchase at local bookstores. It is based on a business project she developed for one of her MBA courses back in 1997.

Yvette Reyes, J.D., 1995, in October 2008, relocated her practice to South Dade and opened a new firm that concentrates on family law and criminal defense. She is also a family law mediator and will be opening offices in Wisconsin and Minnesota in 2009.


Carol Jensen, M.B.A, 1994, It has been 15 years since she completed the Capstone in Fort Lauderdale at the end of April in 1994! She attended the Cedar Rapids, Iowa cluster from 1992 - 1994. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in December 2008.
Her dissertation study (Private Loan Counseling for Undergraduate Students: The Role of College Financial Aid Counselors) was published on December 17, 2008, in the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators; published January 5, 2009, in Education News; and was approved and became available on ERIC documents on January 21, 2009 (ED 503771).
She is currently vice president of a large privately owned bank in Iowa. She also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in business and higher education. For her doctoral study, she interviewed college financial aid counselors of private, not-for-profit, and public colleges and universities in a 12-state region.


John R. Wetsch, Ph.D., 1994, has been selected as one of Computerworld's 2009 IT Premier 100 Leaders in their Dec. 8, 2009 publication. His education at NSU was a key contributor to this honor as it directly relates to how his team manages and implements information systems.Read the story. Andrew Y. Winston, J.D., 1994, a personal injury trial attorney and managing partner in the Fort Lauderdale-based Lawlor Winston & Justice law firm, was inducted as the 46th President of the Broward County Justice Association (BCJA) at their Annual Installation Banquet in conjunction with Judge’s Night on December 17, 2008, at Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale. Winston is dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals and assisting families of loved ones who have been injured through the negligence of others. Winston’s practice focuses on the areas of general personal injury, medical malpractice, wrongful death and the personal representation of physicians and lawyers in malpractice and ethics matters. Andrew is a 1994 law school graduate of Nova Southeastern University. He is an active Eagle member of the Florida Justice Association, the American Association for Justice, the Broward County Bar Association, the Kentucky Justice Association, and the Louisville Bar Association. Winston’s leadership roles include being the past Chair of the Florida Bar’s Grievance Committee 17D, and he currently serves as a Florida Bar Fee Arbitrator, a Florida Bar Grievance Mediator and sits on the Florida Bar’s Grievance Committee 17A. He was a volunteer Guardian ad litem for abused and neglected children in Broward County, for 11 years. He is AV rated and included in Martindale-Hubbell's Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers, and is a member of the Million Dollar Advocate’s Forum.


Katrina Workman Berger, J.D., 1993, has been named the Deputy Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Office of Investigations, for New Orleans. As the No. 2 for the New Orleans' Office of Investigations, she will oversee the daily operations and investigations of the 16 ICE offices in Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. ICE is responsible a wide range of investigations related to national security, smuggling and exporting of illegal arms, financial crimes, commercial fraud, human trafficking, narcotics smuggling, cyber crimes, child pornography/exploitation, and immigration fraud/identity theft. Prior to her current position, Ms. Berger had served as an Assistant Special Agent in Charge for the last four years in New Orleans and most recently was responsible for the oversight of all ICE investigations and operations in western Louisiana and Arkansas. She also holds a Master's Degree from Loyola University-New Orleans.


Richard Cottrell, D.O., 1990, has been elected President of the Pinellas County Osteopathic Society.


Dominick A. Potena, Ed.D., 1988, has been selected as the 2009 New Jersey Superintendent of the Year by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators. Potena has served as Superintendent of Schools for the Margate City School District since 1982. His name will be submitted to the American Association of School Administrators for consideration of the National Superintendent of the Year.


Michael E. Dutko, J.D., 1984, has been selected for inclusion into the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.
