Alumni Chapter President Profile: Dr. Jeffrey Livermore,
Detroit & GSCIS Chapter President |
Jeffrey A. Livermore, PhD ’05, is the Chair of Business Information Technology and information Assurance at Walsh College. He teaches in the BIT, Information Assurance, and Doctorate of Management in Executive Leadership programs and is currently researching the ethics of teaching information security. He is currently researching IT/IA student recruitment at Walsh College, as he aspires to increase student enrollment. Dr. Livermore has a syndicated newspaper column, has written a book, and has been published in multiple journals.
In his spare time, he enjoys paintball, his Lego Mindstorms robot, and playing with his German shepherd. Dr. Livermore enjoys working with the NSU alumni association and is looking forward to our fall event, which will be at a local cider mill – a true Michigan tradition!

New Miami Lakes police commander knows the value of education
As a college professor and Nova Southeastern University law school graduate, Ignacio Alvarez hopes in his new role as Miami Lakes police commander that he will encourage officers to pursue higher education.

Selected In MLB 1st Year Player Draft
Four Nova Southeastern University baseball players were selected in the 2009 MLB First year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon. Miles Mikolas, Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg, J.D. Martinez and Michael Fiers were all selected by major league organizations.

Dr. Steven Gold, Center for Psychological Studies
CPS Professor Steven Gold is the 2009 president of the APA Division of Trauma Psychology, the newest division of the American Psychological Association. Gold is also the inaugural editor of the Division’s professional journal, Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice and Policy.
Gold also created a task force with 2009 NSU Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Joan Cook (Ph.D., ‘99), and established a Division of Trauma Psychology Fundraising Committee led by former chair of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) Rob Rella (Ph.D., ‘94).

Elkuin Mauricio Angee, M.S. ’07, has been named the senior manager of IT security and compliance at Universal Orlando. Prior to joining Universal Orlando, Angee supported the Federal Aviation Administration and the Census Bureau, and served as a computer security official (CSO) for NASA at Kennedy Space Center. At Universal Orlando, Angee’s role has been to protect the confidentiality and integrity of data. This includes securing guest personal information, credit cards, and team member records and to ensure their systems are protected against attacks that may compromise sensitive information. |

Annabella Barboza, J.D. ’07, is an associate with the law firm of Goren, Cherof, Doody & Ezrol, P.A. in Fort Lauderdale. She focuses her practice on commercial and residential real estate transactions, as well as probate and general corporate matters. She is a volunteer with the Florida Lawyers Saving Homes Program of the Florida Bar. |

On February 20, Jeremy Bidwell Ph.D. ’08, was asked by the Illinois Psychological Association to testify at the Illinois House of Representatives, Health Care Licenses Committee hearing in support of a bill proposing prescriptive authority for licensed psychologists with additional training in psychopharmacology. Dr. Bidwell is the Associate Director of the Illinois Center for Rural Psychology which has recently adopted the push for prescription privileges for Medical Psychologists as a central mission focus of the organization and will be showing support in Illinois and Wisconsin as a means to providing greater mental health care services in rural communities.

Mark Blais, Psy.D. ’90, is the 2009 recipient of the Theodore Millon Award in Personality Psychology. Presented by the American Psychological Association (APA), the award honors an outstanding psychologist engaged in advancing the science of personality psychology including the areas of personology and personality disorders. Dr. Blais is an Associate Professor of Psychology (Psychiatry) at Harvard Medical School and the Associate Chief of Psychology and Director of the Psychological Evaluation and Research Laboratory, a comprehensive psychological assessment and research program. He also serves as the Director of the Adult Track of the Massachusetts General Hospital Clinical Psychology Internship. Blais is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Personality Assessment. |

William H. Cassidy, Ed.D. ’06, will retire as president of Washington County Community College in Calais on December 31, 2009, after a distinguished 36-year career in Maine public education. Cassidy has served as president of WCCC since 2003. Under his leadership, the school has added new academic programs, undertaken a number of significant capital improvements, and formed new articulation agreements and partnerships with colleges and universities in Maine and New Brunswick. His tenure has also been marked by an increased emphasis on volunteerism and the role of the college in the life of the local community.
Dr. Cassidy has served in a number of senior administrative posts within the Maine Community College System, as an associate commissioner within the Maine Department of Education, as director of the Waterville Regional Vocational Center, and as a teacher at the middle, high school, and college levels. |

Brian Freedman, Ph.D. ’06, was interviewed by National Public Radio on January 15, 2009 where he discussed his work with children with mild autism. Dr. Friedman is on staff at the Kennedy Krieger’s Center for Autism and Related Disorders, at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the Kennedy Krieger Institute is a multi-faceted, multidisciplinary program for children with autism spectrum disorders. |

Brandon Fuld, B.S. ’07, has been working as an Environmental Scientist for the past 2 years at a Engineering, Consulting, and Design firm that has been around since 1889. The firm is Lockwood, Kessler, & Bartlett Inc. and is located in Syosset, NY. |

Judy Goodman ’J.D. 03, a health care law concentration graduate, was recently recognized in the 2009 Palm Beach Daily News supplement entitled "Palm Beach Elite: 100 People Who Get Things Done" in the Medicine and Healthcare category as a public policy specialist for her consulting work for Good Samaritan Medical Center. Melba Griffith, J.D. ’93, is licensed in FL, NJ and PA and opened her Philadelphia Law Office concentrating in the area of Pet Law (a.k.a. Animal Law). Melba completed the LLM in Trial Advocacy at Temple University – Beasley School of Law (ranked #3 in the nation) and graduated this May. |

D'aun Hajdu ’09, will be joining San Juan Eye centers in Delta and Montrose, Colorado. She will begin her career in July of 2009 and will spend time between Delta and Aspen, Colorado where her husband Steve is employed. |

Kathleen Harmon, Ph.D. ‘03, published an article titled “Case Study as to the Effectiveness of Dispute Review Boards on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project” in the Journal of Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution in Engineering and Construction in February 2009. |

Kenneth E. Johnson, D.O. ‘91, joins NSU CPS Researchers Drs. Linda and Mark Sobell and staff in recent publication in Addictive Behaviors. The research is from the CDC funded Project Healthy CHOICES, designed to reduce the risk of alcohol exposed pregnancies. |

Aneesh Lakhani, Pharm. D. ’04, was recognized at the annual Broward County Pharmacy Association (BCPA) Scholarship & Recognition Awards for his year as 2008-2009 President. The BCPA also recognized Dr. Fred Lippman (Ed.D. ’03) for his 50 years as a licensed pharmacist in Broward County. |

Theresa Lynch, Ed.D. ‘09, while doing her doctoral dissertation at NSU, came upon a system of education known as Workshop Way that aims to open up the learning capacity in all students. Dr. Lynch’s mission now is to make this system of education available to the struggling teachers and students who are in such need of compassion and support. Learn more about Workshop Way here. |

Jessica Parker, Psy.D. ’07, is Chief of Psychology at Ft. Stewart, GA where she oversees eight psychologists, supervises social workers, and conducts military medical boards. Captain Parker is preparing to deploy to Iraq in June for 13 months. |

Patricia Rotsztain Frost, M.S. ‘05 is the Director of the Integrative Wellness Forum, dedicated to empowering women by providing choices for health and wellbeing. The Forum meets twice a month in Aventura and Boca Raton and presents a holistic approach to a mental or physical health issue. In a friendly and inspirational atmosphere, the Forums discusses drugless, all natural treatments for diet and nutrition, allergies, hormones, PMS and menopause, pain, stress, anxiety, sleep, cleansing and detox, cravings and emotional distress. CPS Professors Linda Sobell, Mark Sobell, and Ed Simco, along with Monica Roy (Ph.D. ’07), Ramona Palmerio-Roberts (Psy.D. ’07), and doctoral students Miriam Dum and Heather Manor co-authored “Comparison of the Quick Drinking Screen and the Alcohol Timeline Followback with outpatient alcohol abusers,” for the journal Substance Use and Misuse.

Mohammed Tahseen, M.S. ’94, has 15 years experience in IT management, development, reporting, etc. He has designed almost 20 databases for internal use at the City of Plantation, which includes one of the fire department 911 calls. Mr. Tahseen also has a consulting business for software development, and is a computer science professor at Miami Dade College, Broward College, and Everest University. |

Terese Tye, M.A. ’03, is the recipient of a government scholarship to attend the International Education & Resource Network’s (iEARN) Master Trainer Workshop to be held in Ifrane, Morocco in July 2009. The scholarship is one of only three granted by the US Department of Education in conjunction with the iEARN program. Ms. Tye was additionally chosen as a professional iEARN presenter at Ohio’s first Global Institute to be held at Kent State University in August. |

Marie Wallace, Ed.D. ’04, has been an instructor for Kaplan University for four years. She was appointed to the Oxford Roundtable, where she presented and published her research. She spends time traveling as an educational consultant for a company that provides services to autistic children. Dr. Wallace’s frequent flights to see grandchildren were the inspiration for her children's picture book "My Traveling Grandma," illustrated by Mike Motz. For more information, click here.

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) is in its 33rd year serving the lifelong learning interests and needs of the growing experienced older adult and retirement community in Broward County. A part of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, the LLI is based on the Davie campus of NSU.
Our membership of experienced older adults attends an extensive program of lectures, workshops, discussion groups and field trips. They can take advantage of renowned NSU faculty members, exciting peer leaders, and prominent visiting experts in such fields as humanities, sciences, health and government. Many of the speakers, faculty and guests, come for a single event, while others come for a short series, e.g. once a month or whatever fits their topics.
