Dear NSU Alumni,

The Office of Alumni Relations is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. Every year, each school and center at NSU recognizes an outstanding alumnus who has achieved an outstanding record of distinction and accomplishment in his or her field or community. The awards are presented to each award winner by the dean of their prospective school or center during the University's premier event, the Celebration of Excellence. The 2008 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awards will be presented at the 11th Annual Celebration of Excellence, Thursday, January 22, 2009.

To nominate someone, or yourself, for the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award simply complete the form and return it along with a professional resume and any additional information you wish to include to: NSU, Office of Alumni Relations, 33301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314-7796. All nominations must be received by September 17. 2008.

The chapter is providing an afternoon lunch for the children and staff at Everyday
Blessings. Everyday Blessings is a nonprofit agency devoted to children who have been
abused, abandoned and neglected. Their mission is to find homes for children‐ homes where they are wanted, homes that will provide them with safety, stability and permanency. The Village at Everyday Blessings houses about 28‐38 children.

A Day For Children - Health Fair
Sunday, September 14, 2008, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. This fun-filled day focuses on FREE health care (including hearing, balance, vision, dental health, and medical screenings), social services and other resources to meet the behavioral needs of Broward County's children (ages birth - 15 years).

Shark Shuffle
Save the Date! Sunday, September 21st, on main campus in Fort Lauderdale. This 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by the NSU Wellness Committee, is designed to promote health and wellness among the NSU community.

Atlanta Alumni Chapter Networking EvenAtlanta Alumni Chapter Networking Event- Saturday, June 28th, 2008
NSU's Atlanta Alumni Chapter members had a great time swapping business cards at Fox Sports Grill in Atlantic Station. The chapter was delighted to have had 48 people come together for fun, networking , and idea sharing. NSU Alumnus Chris Kehl, B.S. '96, was the featured speaker for the day. Mr. Kehl, a SE Regional Recruiter for the Lucas Group (a major recruiting firm in Atlanta), spoke about the "do's and don'ts" when seeking a new job in a major city.

Alumni representing the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, Graduate School of Computer and Information Systems, Fischler School of Education and Human Services, Shepard Broad Law School, College of Optometry, and Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences were all in attendance. We look forward to seeing you at future events.

DHSc Alumni Chapter Annual MeetingDHSc Alumni Chapter Annual Meeting, July 6-8, 2008
The DHSc Alumni Chapter conducted its annual business meeting in the Student Educational Center at the NSU Orlando campus. Alumni also took time to enjoy an evening at Bongo's Cuban Restaurant at Downtown Disney after seeing a performance of Cirque de Soleil. Thank you to all who attended!

Alumni Spotlight

Kevin P. Crosby, J.D. ‘86, A Partner in the law firm of Brinkley, Morgan, Solomon, Tatum, Stanley, Lunny & Crosby, LLP, was one of only eighty attorneys throughout the state of Florida to qualify for Board Certification in the area of Intellectual Property. Mr. Crosby earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Rutgers University in New Jersey in 1983 and received his Juris Doctor degree from Nova Southeastern University in 1986. He is the co-author of the Florida Law section of the International Trademark Association's Treatise entitled "State Trademark and Unfair Competition Law." He practices in the areas of intellectual property protection and litigation, concentrating in patent, trademark, copyright and computer/Internet law. Mr. Crosby is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is admitted to practice before all Florida state courts, the United States District Court for the Southern (including Trial Bar) and Middle Districts of Florida, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh and Federal Circuits. He is a member of the American Bar (Litigation Section), The Florida Bar (Trial Lawyers' Section), and the Broward County Bar Associations, the American Association for Justice, the International Trademark Association and the South Florida Intellectual Property Association.


Chris Patterson, J.D. 85, has been named by Florida Super Lawyers magazine as one of the top attorneys in Florida for 2008. Only five percent of the lawyers in the state are named by Super Lawyers. Chris Patterson was previously awarded this distinction in 2006 and 2007. The selections for Super Lawyers are made by Law & Politics, a division of Key Professional Media, Inc. of Minneapolis, Minn.


Nicole Morris, JD '04, has opened her own law firm, The Law Office of Nicole C. Morris, P.A. in West Palm Beach. She practices in estate planning, asset protection and business planning.


Jason E. Portnof, D.M.D. 02
He married Courtney Gross in Bridgehampton, NY on June 14, 2008. Courtney teaches children with high-functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. The wedding party and guests included many Nova Southeasterun University alumni. Nova Southeastern University alumni guests included Alireza Moheb, Gust Kapetan, Jason Bodnar, Eric Block, Al Hawryluck, Judd Shaw, and Jonathan Cantor. Jason graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in 2002 and Weill Cornell Medical College in 2006. He completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital. His book, "First Aid for the NBDE Part 2" was published by McGraw Hill Medical in 2008. The newlyweds reside in Australia, where Jason is a fellow in the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Royal Children's Hospital of Melbourne.


Lesley Logan B.S. '05 Her charter school, Literacy Leadership Technology Academy has just completed its third successful year. She co-founded the middle school in 2005 and is working on the new high school, LLT Charter High School, set to open in August 2008. Under her leadership, the school has increased from 76 students, 6 staff, and 2 buildings in 05 to 300 students, 32 staff, and 4 buildings in 08. She is also writing the elementary charter this summer for a 2009 opening.

Bill Steinman, Ed.D '92 , came onboard with Ohio University Without Boundaries in 2000 as a program consultant to facilitate a three week boot camp for all new hires from a Dutch information systems company called IQUIP Informatica. In addition, he has been a faculty member for the Sogeti-Netherlands program (merger), ever since 2002.
Bill received his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Education and Masters of Science in Teaching (emphasis on Management Information Systems) from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He received his doctorate in education studying distance education and computer-based learning from Nova Southeastern University in 1991. Upon completing his doctorate, Bill designed and developed a masters program in technology-based learning for teachers in Iowa. Bill has taught MIS courses for over 24 years at the collegiate level. During his 1998-99 sabbatical, he worked for IBP, Inc. (now Tyson Foods, Inc.) in their web development/desktop services department creating an interactive CD-ROM for the Sales Division, designing extranets and intranets, and was on a team to review their current IT procedures and recommend a new IT methodology. In addition, he has taught database design, networking, systems analysis & design, C++ programming, SQL querying, basic PC applications, COBOL, and web design & development at Ohio University - Chillicothe.


Jared Lechtenstein, D.O. ‘ 01,is joining the Cardiology practice of David Steiman, M.D. with locations in Plantation and Fort Lauderdale. He has completed 6 years of internal medicine and cardiology training at Mount Sinai Medical Center and is board eligible in Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology and board certified in Internal Medicine and Comprehensive Echocardiography.

Sezvin Norman Hamilton, M.B.A., '90, is now the President of the Rotary of St. Andrew, Jamaica. He hopes to complete a major project by July 2009, which is to purchase and deploy a mobile health clinic to provide the public, easy access to HIV/AIDS testing in Jamaica, and to provide HIV/AIDS prevention educational material for 20 youth centers in the city of Kingston. In Jamaica, it is estimated that 25,000 persons have contracted HIV, and approximately 60% of them are unaware that they are infected. The project is estimated to cost US$250,000 and this sum will be raised from corporate and international donors as well as from local fundraising.

Gary L. Brown, J.D. '95, JOINS WEISS SEROTA HELFMAN PASTORIZA COLE & BONISKE, P.L. FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Weiss Serota Helfman Pastoriza Cole & Boniske, P.L. has announced that Gary L. Brown has joined the firm's Fort Lauderdale office in the Construction Litigation Group. "By bringing Gary and his team to the firm, we solidify and expand our capabilities in the growing field of complex construction litigation," said Jamie Cole, Managing Director of the firm. "We are pleased to have attorneys of Gary's experience and skills on board, and know thathis presence will have an immediate positive impact on our value to our clients." Joining as a partner, Brown is Board Certified by The Florida Bar in Construction Law and will serve as Chair of the firm's Construction Litigation Group. Previously with Kelley Kronenberg, he practices in general commercial and business litigation, specializing in construction litigation, including contract negotiation and dispute resolution, construction lien law, surety law, lien and bond claims, construction defect and mold claims, and delay, inefficiency and acceleration claims. Brown has been practicing law since 1995 in both State and Federal Courts throughout Florida, and he has extensive experience in trial and arbitration proceedings. His knowledge of issues affecting the construction industry is enhanced by his involvement in construction-related organizations, including the Construction Association of South Florida (CASF) where he has served on the governmental affairs committee.Brown earned his B.S., with distinction, from Nova Southeastern University and his J.D. from the Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University.


Gerald Greenspoon, J.D. '79, co-managing partner of the law firm of Greenspoon Marder, P.A., has been named a "Super Lawyer" by Florida Super Lawyer magazine, an annual publication that recognizes the top five percent of attorneys in the state. The list is compiled from peer nominations, in which attorneys in Florida are asked to nominate their choice for the state's best lawyers, based on individuals they have observed firsthand in action.
Gerald Greenspoon, co-managing partner, founded the firm along with Michael Marder 26 years ago. Nationally recognized for his expertise, Greenspoon practices in real estate, timeshare and condominium law. He was also the recipient of a South Florida Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Additionally, he is a founding trustee of the Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce, and this is his third year being named a "Super Lawyer." Greenspoon resides in Hollywood. Greenspoon received his B.C. from Sir George Williams University in Montreal and a License in Laws from the University of Ottawa. He received his J.D. from Nova University.


Dr. Nilda E. Banchs-Sandoval, Pharm D '01, From Ponce Puerto Rico, is enjoying a Summer Study Abroad in China and Japan with NSU and other 50 participants during the month of June 2008. She is recipient of the 2007 Distinguished Alumni College of Pharmacy.

David Irwin, J.D. '03, an attorney with an extensive background handling yacht contracts as high as $35 million and providing legal services in all facets of maritime law, has joined the Fort Lauderdale law firm Kelley / Uustal to develop a new admiralty and maritime law department. A South Florida native with more than 14 years of industry experience, Irwin provides a variety of legal services, including international transactions, yacht foreclosures, maritime lien actions, commercial litigation as well as legal counsel to vessel owners, crew members and marine businesses. His clients also include manufactures, dealers, banks, brokers, buyers, sellers, marine repair and maintenance companies, individuals and corporate entities. Irwin has a bachelor's of science degree in economics from Florida State University and is a cum laude graduate of Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad Law Center. He is a member of the Florida Bar with admission to the Southern, Middle and Northern Districts of the United States District Courts of Florida. He also is a long-time member of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, where he has served on the government relations committee.


Manoj Patankar, Ph.D. '97, has been named dean of Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology at Saint Louis University. Patankar had been serving as interim dean since August 2006. During his tenure as interim dean, Patankar secured funding for additional faculty positions, launched new degree programs, and garnered greater support from alumni and other stakeholders. The college also has embarked on an extensive marketing campaign to increase undergraduate enrollment and is working with the U.S. Army to provide students with additional internship and research opportunities. As dean, Patankar said his top priorities are to strengthen undergraduate and graduate programs, improve research efforts, and enhance relationships with alumni and industry leaders.
