Black History Month at Nova Southeastern University, February 7-March 8, 2008

Black History Month Film Marathon
Come to the Alvin Sherman Library, from noon – 6:00 p.m., to celebrate Black History Month with a back-to-back showing of classic films that explore prejudice, racial tension and racial tolerance. The lineup of films are: Pinky (1949), Intruder in the Dust (1949) and The Defiant Ones (1958). NSU-COM 12th Annual Alumni Reunion and CME Program, February 8-10, 2008
Mark your calendars! The 12th Annual NSU-COM Alumni Reunion and CME Program will be held February 8-10, 2008. This year, we will be honoring the classes of 1988 and 1998. All social events, including the opening reception for alumni, family, and friends on Friday, February 8, 2008 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. and the banquet Saturday, February 9, 2008 from 7:00-11:00 p.m., will be held at the Renaissance Hotel-Plantation. Seven hours of free CME seminars will be held on the NSU Davie campus in the Health Professions Division (Terry Building) on Saturday and Sunday. Additional information will be mailed directly.

Detroit Alumni Chapter’s New Year Kick Off on Saturday, January 12, 2008
On January 12th, the Detroit Alumni Chapter kicked off the New Year with an enjoyable luncheon hosted at Walsh College in Novi, MI. Members were treated to an interesting discussion about the appropriate uses of technology in education led by guest speaker Charles Schlosser, Ph.D. from the Fischler School of Education and Human Services. Chapter President Jeffrey Livermore, Ph.D., was delighted to gather fellow NSU alumni to show their NSU pride at Walsh, where he and two other NSU Alumni teach. Two old friends from the class of ’77 and ’78 were reunited at this meeting. Thank you to all who attended!

Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia Alumni Chapter’s Holiday Kick-Off Party on Friday, December 7, 2007.
On December 7th, members of the Northeast Florida & Southeast Georgia Alumni Chapter got together at the NSU Jacksonville Student Educational Center for an evening of good food and good fun! The chapter was happy to be joined by site director Kathy Sandusky, and other staff from the SEC. After enjoying their food and drinks, Billy Waldrop informed the attendees of the chapter’s plans for the coming year.

Chicago Alumni Chapter’s Holiday Dinner Party on December 8, 2007.
The Chicago Alumni Chapter held its annual holiday celebration party on December 8, 2007. Thirty-eight NSU graduates attended including one of the first graduates from NSU (Dr. Joseph Lavizzo). President Curtis A. Smith said this was one of the best dinner parties despite the snow and sleet of winter in the Midwest!

Robert Mayer, M.B.A, ‘00 is the President of DECOLAV, the industry leader in trend-forward bathroom furnishings and fixtures, and was the recipient of a Merit Award at the Interior Design magazine’s 2007 “Best of Year” awards. DECOLAV’s Cityview™ vanity was honored in the “Bath: Accessories & Hardware category.” This year’s awards ceremony, held November 29 in the newly opened Times Center.

Robert Preziosi, D.P.A., ‘77 – a Professor of Management in the Huizenga School has published a new book, The Leadership Zone. It is based upon 25 years of research and personal experience as a leader in business academia and not-for-profits.

Delores M. Smiley, Ed.D., ‘95 –is proud to announce her recent gubernatorial appointment to the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers (FFMY) Board of Directors.

The mission of the FFMT is: to increase the number of minority teachers in Florida to better reflect our stat’s diverse population; to provide financial awards and extensive pre-professional development, and; to positively impact public education by expanding knowledge paradigms of learning and teaching in preparing our youth.

Roberta G. Stanley, J.D., ‘83 was listed along with Harris K. Solomon, and Kenneth A. Gordon as partners of the law firm Brinkley, Morgan, Solomon Tatum, Stanley, Lunny & Crosby, LLP as Top Lawyers in South Florida in the South Florida Legal Guide 2008 Annual Edition. The South Florida Legal Guide is an annual publication which ballots a select group of highly regarded attorneys in South Florida. Those attorneys nominate others who they believe should be selected as Top Attorneys.

Dorothy J. Orr, Ed.D, ‘79, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BrightStar Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in South Florida with more than 36,000 members, received the 2007 CUES Director of the Year award at the Credit Union Executives Society’s 2007 Directors Conference at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on Hawaii Big Island.

A strong advocate for education, Orr has held a variety of positions in teaching and school administration, culminating in her 1999 appointment as Superintendent of Schools for Broward County, Fl. A position she held until her retirement.

Christopher M. Neilson, J.D., ‘83 is the President-Elect for the Broward County Bar Association for 2007 – 2008. His term as President will be effective July 1, 2008.

Ralph Hogges, Ed.D., ‘77, published his book, Public Policy and Colleges and Universities, A Resource Guide for Executives in Higher Education. This book is available for $45.00 at NSU’s Institute for Public Policy and Executive Leadership in Higher Education, by calling (800) 986-3223, extension 28454, or email hoggesr@nova.edu.

Wafa Abdulrazzaq, DR OPT, ’01, opened her Private Optometry Practice in Cooper City, FL. Dr. Abdulrazzaq grew up in Pembroke Pines, FL. She graduated in 1997 from Cooper City High School. She then entered into a rigorous Dual-Admission Optometry program where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree and Doctor of Optometry degree, graduating in May, 2004. After completing school she practiced at numerous facilities full scope eye centers including the Rand Eye Institute. She has now accomplished her dream in building her own private practice where she can give individual personalized care to each of her patients on her own terms. She is also offering all Nova Southeastern faculty, students, and alumni 10% off anything they purchase with a special Nova discounted eye exam.
