Ontario Alumni Chapter Spring Luncheon-Saturday, May 3, 2008
Join the Ontario Alumni Chapter for their Spring Luncheon! Dr. Anthony DeNapoli, NSU Dean of International Affairs, and Deborah Perlicz, Coordinator of Alumni Programs, will travel from NSU’s main campus in Fort Lauderdale to attend this event! Come hear the latest NSU news and discuss topics specific to NSU alumni in living in Canada. Each alumnus will receive an NSU giveaway! Friends, family, colleagues, and prospective students are welcome to attend. Join us on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 11:00 am at the Hot House Café, 35 Church Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5E 1T3.

Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Presents a Festival of One-Act Plays
The final theatre offering of the year by the Performing and Visual Arts Program at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will be a festival of student-directed works in the annual Director’s Festival of One-Acts at the Black Box Theatre. The Black Box Theatre is located in the Performing and Visual Arts Wing of the University Center. Show times are:

April 24-26, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.
April 27, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.

Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Presents Ambassador Joseph Wilson as Commencement Speaker
Former ambassador Joseph Wilson will be the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Speaker for the NSU 2008 undergraduate commencement program on Saturday, May 10, 2008. Wilson served in the U.S. diplomatic service from 1976 through 1998, was acting ambassador to Iraq during Operation Desert Shield as well as ambassador to Gabon, Sao Tome, and Principe, and has served as the senior director for African Affairs at the National Security Council. President George H. Bush called him a "true hero" for his efforts to free more than 100 American hostages in Iraq following the invasion of Kuwait. More recently, Wilson was a central figure in questioning the analysis of data linking Iraq to possible acquisition of nuclear materials and "weapons of mass destruction," and the public disclosure that Wilson’s wife, Valerie Plame, was a covert agent for the CIA.

The American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting and Exposition, held March 14-17, 2008 in San Diego, provided an excellent opportunity for our College of Pharmacy (COP) faculty, staff, students, and alumni in attendance to discover the latest trends and best practices in pharmacy, while sharing experiences and ideas with pharmacy professionals from every practice setting; chain, independent, hospital, federal, long-term care, nuclear, and more with a celebration of the pharmacy profession.

The New Jersey Alumni Chapter recently celebrated their dedication to NSU at their mid-winter brunch. Dr. Joseph Gannon, EDL ‘02, and middle school principal, announced that he graduated from the Rutgers University School of Law (Newark Campus) in December and had just taken the NJ Bar exam. After enjoying a fantastic brunch at the Woodbridge Hilton Hotel, Dr. Costa announced the NSU Alumni Chapter Awards that the NJ chapter received during Homecoming Weekend this year. Also, Dr Costa presented the NSU Alumni Association Super Shark Award to Dr. David Weintraub for his outstanding contributions on behalf of Nova Southeastern University to both the Alumni Association and the NJ Chapter. Thank you to all who attended!

On March 15, twenty-five former soccer players and coaches attended the NSU Men’s Soccer Alumni Game. Congratulations to the alumni team who squeezed out a 3-2 victory over the current NSU soccer team!

On March 19, more than 100 M.B.A., M.I.B.A., and Law Center graduates gathered for an evening of networking at the Riverside Hotel. Alumni were joined by special guests from the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship and the Shepard Broad Law Center.

More than 1,400 NSU alumni, students, and staff came together at Dolphins Stadium on March 28 to see the Florida Marlins take on the New York Yankees. Alumni, family, and friends of NSU enjoyed a pre-game reception where they had an opportunity to take pictures with Billy the Marlin and Razor the Shark. Alumni in attendance also received gifts from the NSU Alumni Association. As the reception wrapped up, the alumni moved to their seats and listened to NSU’s Vocal Ensemble perform the national anthem.

The Eastern New York Alumni Chapter held its spring meeting on Saturday, March 29 at the Wyndham Airport Hotel. Dr. Kathy Corbett, chapter president, excitedly noted that there were many new faces at the event. These new faces belonged to recent NSU graduates who are eager, willing and ready to become active NSU alumni. Immediately following a delicious luncheon, Dr. Corbett introduced fellow alumnus Dr. Richard O’Connell who shared his journey from school counselor to book author. After retiring from a 40+-year career as a school counselor, Dr. O’Connell wrote a book, Motivating Kids to the Max, which is filled with the lessons he learned during his career in education. The New York State School Counselors Association recently named Dr. O’Connell’s book its outstanding book of the year. On Saturday, March 29th, members of the M.I.B.A Alumni Chapter gathered at the Knife Argentinean Restaurant in Hallandale Beach to celebrate the chapter's anniversary. Members enjoyed good food and good company, while reconnecting with old friends from the program. The chapter celebrated 5 great years, and expects the next 5 to get better and better! Thank you to all who attended.

Northeast Florida & South East Georgia Rock for a Cure
The NE Florida SE Georgia Alumni Chapter joined several teams from Duval, St Johns, Nassau, & Clay counties to form part of the Inaugural Rock for a Cure at the Jacksonville Landing. Rock for a Cure raised dollars for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life events throughout the First Coast. Guests, survivors and volunteers enjoyed live entertainment from belly dancers, bingo, ribbon dancers, children’s zone with bounce houses and live bands from the main stage. The event was very successful, and the Chapter had an opportunity to interact with the community and meet new alumni.

On April 5, members of the Palm Beach County NSU Law Alumni Chapter put on their tool belts for a great cause. Members teamed up to build a house for a family in need. This is just one example of the chapter's committed to their community. We would like to acknowledge chapter president Scott Atherton for spearheading the community service event and to the alumni and staff who attended.

The Northeast Florida/Southeast Georgia Alumni Chapter participated in the Mandarin Relay for Life supporting the American Cancer Society in April.

Alumni cheered as the first lap kicked off early in the evening and was dedicated to cancer survivors and those who have gone on before. Alumni had a blast as they walked the track and took in all of the different groups that came out to support this endeavor. The chapter is proud to report they raised $700 to support this important cause.

Katheryn M. Mehaffey, J.D., ‘06 - The law firm of Weiss Serota Helfman Pastoriza Cole & Boniske announced that it has added a new attorney to its staff, adding to its Broward office. Kathryn M. Mehaffey will cover various practice areas for the firm, which serves corporate, government and individual clients.

Joining the firm as an associate, Mehaffey will be working with the Municipal Land Use and Zoning Group out of the Fort Lauderdale office. Her practice focuses on representing municipalities in land use and zoning matters.

Mehaffey earned her B.S. from Iowa State University and her J.D. from Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center. Previously, Mehaffey was an associate with the Law Offices of Holiday Hunt Russell.

She is a member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) Sisterhood.


Violet M. Wilkes, Ed.D. ’06 was named by West Suburban College of Nursing to the Sr. Gregory Krzak Endowed Chair of Nursing Education. Dr. Wilkes will facilitate collaborative nursing education and research projects within Resurrection Health Care. This includes providing classroom and practicum instruction, she will assist the Dean of Nursing and faculty with curriculum design, planning and implementation of nursing curriculum.

"Dr. Wilkes has the knowledge and skills to foster research among educators and clinicians," said Rebecca Jones, Chancellor, D.N.Sc., R.N., C.N.A.A., B.C., West Suburban College of Nursing. "She possesses the expertise to fill the most essential needs of the College at this time."

One of Dr. Wilkes' new duties will be to provide service activities to the local and professional health care community. "As the facilitator of learning, the teacher is instrumental in improving the living standards of students and the communities in which they live," Dr. Wilkes wrote. "I believe a major purpose of education is to increase the quality and quantity of contributions of individual to their communities and the larger society."

Before assuming her new role, Dr. Wilkes served as Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Course Coordinator for Medical Surgical Nursing at West Suburban College of Nursing. Her responsibilities included teaching the Medical Surgical Practicum and Informatics course in the Graduate Nursing Program. She also developed a web-assisted nutrition course.

Did You Know?

No. 2 NSU Women's Golf Claims Title In NSU Spring Classic
The No. 2 nationally ranked Nova Southeastern University claimed the title by two strokes in their own NSU Spring Classic at the par-72, 6,090-yard Woodmont Golf Course on Tuesday, March 25. The Sharks also established a new tournament record by finishing with a two-day score low of 608.

Florida Southern, ranked No. 4 in the latest Golfstat.com head-to-head rankings finished just behind, with a two day total of 610. No. 5 Barry University finished in third place (612), led by tournament medalist Isadora Stapff, who won on the first playoff hole. Daytona Beach CC (622) and No. 6 Lynn University (637) rounded out the top five.

With three players among the top five, Nova Southeastern was able to take home their own tournament title for the first time in three years.

The Sharks were led by freshman Taylor Collins, who finished the tournament in a tie for third place with a two-day total of 150. Fellow freshman Sandra Changkija (152) and defending NCAA Division II Player and Freshman of the Year Maria Garcia-Austt (152) each tied for fifth place and finished just three strokes behind the leaders. Nicole Whitmore tied for 13th place and Fredrika Hakansson (t-20th) finished the scoring for NSU.

The Sharks travel next to Beallsville, Md., to compete in Georgetown University’s Hoya Invitational.
