Dr. Angela Batista hired as director of diversity and inclusion at Champlain College
Dr. Angela Batista has been named the director of diversity and inclusion at Champlain College in Burlington. Batista most recently served as a high school teacher and counselor in Miramar, Florida, and she previously worked in student services at the University of Vermont.
At Champlain, she will oversee the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and will work closely with the student services team to provide support for students. She will provide leadership and assistance in the areas of student recruitment, enrollment and retention activities for underrepresented students, and she will also advise and assist the College in efforts to diversify staff and faculty.
An award-winning teacher, Batista was the chair of the Foreign Language and English for Speakers of Other Languages Department at Miramar High School. She also initiated mentoring programs, coordinated multicultural events and served as a school reform coach. While at UVM, Batista worked in the ALANA Center, the Counseling Center, and the Residential Life Office. Batista received several honors including a Diversity Awareness Thoughtfulness and Courage Award and the creation of an award in her honor at UVM—the Angela Batista Social Justice Award.
“We’re thrilled to have Angela join Champlain College because she brings a wealth of experience and expertise that will benefit our students and the entire campus community,” said Mary Kay Kennedy, vice president for enrollment and student life.
Batista earned a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University, a master’s in counseling from the University of Vermont and a bachelor’s in English education from Brooklyn College. |
