Mark Strauss Honored as Principal of the Year
Mark Strauss, principal at Fort Lauderdale's Virginia Shuman Young Elementary, was named Broward County's principal of the year. As he accepted the award, Strauss was quick to credit the teachers and staff at Shuman Young as "the best" in Broward.
"A school leader can set the course, but if you don't have people follow you, you're out there on an island," said Strauss, Shuman Young's principal since December 2002.
Interim Schools Superintendent Jim Notter announced the award at the Signature Grand in Davie before several hundred teachers, administrators and school district staff.
In 2000, Strauss received that honor while he served as assistant principal of Davie's Flamingo Elementary. Strauss, 39, moved to South Florida 18 years ago from New York to complete advanced degrees at Florida Atlantic University and later at Nova Southeastern University. He got his start in Broward schools as a teacher at West Hollywood Elementary.
At Shuman Young, Strauss said his chief job is to balance the demands of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test and the
individual needs of each child. "We make sure we're doing what's right for the children and not just what's right for a test," said Strauss.
