Did you know that the 2007 Undergraduate Commencement will Feature Former U.S. Surgeon General?
The 2007 undergraduate commencement ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 12, at 11:00 a.m. in the BankAtlantic Center. The Baccalaureate Reception will be held the evening before, on Friday, May 11, at 6:00 p.m. in the University Center, hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.
The 2007 Commencement Speaker for the NSU undergraduate ceremony will be Antonia Novello, M.D., the first Hispanic and first woman to serve as U.S. Surgeon General. Her work has taken her around the globe to bring attention to many pressing issues, particularly those regarding AIDS research and children’s health. To honor her achievements, Novello will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters, as approved by the NSU Board of Trustees.
Etta Mills, a finance major in the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, will serve as the 2007 Student Commencement Speaker. Mills was selected from student auditions among those honored as outstanding students. Mills is on the Dean’s List and a member of several honor societies, including Alpha Chi and Sigma Beta Delta (International Honor Society for Business). She is also active on campus in the Residential Student Association, Pan-African Student Association, and NSU Student Government Association, most recently serving as Vice President of Legislative Affairs Pro Tempore. Mills additionally volunteers at the Star of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in West Park, Florida.
Eric Naples, a fellow finance major in the Huizenga School, has been selected as the recipient of the James Farquhar Award. A four-year
member of the NSU Men’s Soccer Team, Naples has been on the Dean’s List and enrolled in the Honors Program throughout his undergraduate academic career. He is also a member of Sigma Beta Delta (International Honor Society for Business) and Omicron Delta Kappa (the National Leadership Honor Society). Naples has been active in the NSU Student Government Association and the local community, receiving the David and Lee Millman Scholarship Award in 2006 for outstanding contribution to the community. He received the NSU Student Life Achievement Award for 2007 Male Athlete of the Year for his performance on the soccer team. Naples effectively reflects the qualifications of the James Farquhar Award: excellence in scholarship, service, and leadership.
Both Mills and Naples will be recognized at events related to commencement. |
