Dear NSU Alumni: NSU is at an exciting period in its history both academically and in terms of its campus life. Last year we opened up our new 366,000 square foot University Center with venues for Athletics, Recreation, the Student Union and the Performing Arts. This past fall we opened ‘The Commons’, a new 522 bed, state of the art residence hall. Main Campus is transforming and there is an energy buzz which is palpable.
To mark this ‘moment in time’, a Timeline / Time Capsule task force has been created. A time capsule has been purchased and articles are being gathered that signify NSU in 2007/2008. The time capsule will be recessed into a wall in the University Center at Homecoming in February 2008. A chronometer will be embedded in a faceplate on the wall and, at Homecoming, will begin counting backwards from 50 years until that day in 2058 when the time capsule will be opened. For years, students will walk by this dynamic exhibit.
Adjoining this wall will be the ‘Timeline Project,’ a pictorial and video history of the University. This is where we are asking for your help. While NSU has many photos in its archives, we recognize that alumni could be a wonderful resource. Should you have a photograph that captures a moment in time of your years at NSU, we would appreciate your consideration for submission to the ‘Timeline Project.’ There are two ways to submit your pictures to us:
- by emailing them to stumedia@nova.edu (please send high-resolution pictures); or
- by mailing them along with the filled out photo release form to:
Nova Southeastern University
Office of Alumni Relations
3301 College Avenue
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33314
Your photographs will be sent back to you after digitally scanned. Please provide us with a return address.
All photographs submitted will be reviewed by the Timeline Task Force for possible use on the Timeline Wall.
Alumni have helped build campus life into what it has become today. I appreciate your support in helping us recapture some of those “golden memories.”
Sincerely,
Brad A. Williams, Ed.D, ‘98
Dean of Student Affairs

Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Faculty Lecture Series presents Barbara Broadman, Ph.D., on: “Truth, Power, and the Mexican Cult of Death: The Life and Art of Frida Kahlo” This talk, on Tuesday, December 4, will be held at 12:00 p.m. in Parker 240. Frida Kahlo spent most of her adult life reinventing herself in her art. The reality she painted, and created, reflects her personal search for identity and immortality. On this her biographers and critics agree. Overlooked, however, is that her life and work reflect the efforts of a people, the Mexican people, to create a collective identity, a national psyche, by which they, after a half millennium, might rediscover the path to truth and power. Barbara Brodman, Ph.D. professor in the Division of Humanities, will explore that aspect of the collective Mexican psyche with which Frida most identified, and through which she strove to discover her own truths and power—the Mexican cult of death. |

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences’ Distinguished Speaker Series- Thursday, February 21, 2007 On February 21, 2008, the Division of Math, Science, and Technology will present the next Distinguished Speaker in the series, Nobel Prize winner Eric Kandel, M.D. He won for his research in the physiological basis of memory storage in neurons. A refugee from the Nazis as an Austrian Jew, Kandel studied in the United States. His interest in neuroscience led him to recognize, through experiments, that the physical storage of memory relied on synaptic connections between neurons. Connected with this research are investigations into the nature of learning. Kandel describes memory as “a form of mental time travel [that] frees us from the constraints of time and space.” It is the brain’s amazing ability to store a seemingly infinite number of facts, figures and experiences, according to Kandel, which enables us to retrieve what we have learned before the present time. |
