Fast Track Management Development Program - March 18 - April 15, 2006

Managers have been said to have the most difficult job in the organization. The transition to the role of manager is often stressful and complex. Often there are few resources available to ease the transition and provide the knowledge and skills necessary to instill confidence. Acquiring and improving managerial skills is not just for business,' but for managers in all types of organizations - business, government, not-for-profit, education, etc. Evolving from salesperson to sales manager or police officer to sergeant involves learning and acquiring new management skills. This program is designed to develop skills across the entire spectrum of management. The Fast Track Management Development Program consists of 10 modules covering important knowledge and skills required by effective managers. Each module is highly interactive and includes hands-on activities such as short cases, group exercises, and role-plays.

Modules

The Role of Manager
This initial module will study how to manage workers more effectively by understanding the functions of management. Participants will learn to recognize the need to balance the roles and functions in order to successfully achieve individual and organizational goals. Specific topics covered include:

  • Discussion of four types of management activity
  • Assessing value of managerial roles
  • Identifying relationship between management skills and management levels
  • Analyzing management's priorities
  • Learning keys to management success
  • Conduct a motivation planning session

Motivating and Appraising Employees
Successful managers must identify and remove job elements that de-motivate workers. They must also recognize appropriate standards for appraising employees and eliminate common pitfalls in the process. In this session, we will:

  • Understand the elements of an appraisal meeting
  • Describe ways to prepare for an appraisal meeting
  • Determine tasks that lead to successful appraisals
  • Learn the focus points for motivation

Communicating Effectively
In this session, participants will learn to communicate more effectively with subordinates and superiors by identifying and removing common barriers. A key element in the information age is to be able to identify the appropriate forms of communication for different messages. We will use cases and discussion to understand:

  • Verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Gender communication differences
  • Use of email in the organization
  • Skill of listening
  • Use of power in management
  • Manager as a salesperson

Recruiting and Training New Workers
Participants will become familiar with various recruiting and screening programs and learn how to avoid common problems associated with them. Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the need for socialization and training when new workers are hired
  • Labor markets and recruiting issues
  • Strategic recruiting stages and decisions
  • EEO and diversity considerations
  • Evaluating recruiting success
  • Assessing, designing and implementing training

Effective Leadership
Effective managers must understand the principles of effective leadership, and identify their style of leadership. They must also recognize the need for flexibility when leading workers and the consequences of failing to change their style. This session includes:

  • Art and science of leadership as an influence process
  • Difference between management and leadership
  • Leadership theory
  • Charismatic leadership
  • Transactional vs. transformational leadership
  • Guidelines for effective team leadership

Dealing with Organizational Politics
Politics exists in organizations. The manager must understand the working of organizational politics, which includes the importance of influencing subordinates and superiors. Topics for this interactive session include:

  • Meaning of power and politics in an organization
  • Organizational and personal power bases
  • Power tactics, and the relationship between power and politics
  • Response to various power tactics
  • Legitimate, illegitimate and ethical political behavior

Disciplining and Terminating Employees
Discipline is necessary in order to maintain an effective organization, and conflict in the enterprise must be handled professionally and effectively. The learning objectives are:

  • Recognizing the elements of a fair disciplinary system
  • Knowing when to use various forms of discipline
  • Handling conflict more effectively
  • Executing and utilizing a standardized process to discipline employees
  • Correctly preparing, planning and terminating employees who are not performing to the expected standards

Managing and Leading Change
In the 21st century, world change is inevitable and constant. We must not only be able to manage change, but to lead our subordinates in coping with and perhaps even embracing change. Participants will:

  • Establish a vantage point for change management
  • Differentiate among six different kinds of change
  • Assess how people react to change (including self-assessment)
  • Identify and deal with signs of resistance
  • Develop a four-part strategy for managing change

Decision Making for Managers
Managing involves decision making. Participants will understand the elements of effective individual decision making, as well as techniques for involving subordinates in decision making when appropriate. Session goals are:

  • Methods of managing participation in decision making
  • Using new tools for decision making
  • Identifying priorities for individual development in decision making skills
  • Developing skills in analytical decision making
  • Improving personal time management through more efficient decision making

Managing Conflict
Workplace conflict is common in organizations. To manage this issue effectively and reduce the loss of productivity, organizations are looking for specific strategies to identify and manage conflict. In this session, participants will practice strategies that will enable them to add value to their organizations by using conflict to move forward, rather than allowing disagreements to become counterproductive. Learn to:

  • Use tools for reaching an agreement quickly
  • Identify techniques that raise issues needing to be addressed constructively before they negatively impact work relationships or corporate results
  • Practice resolving conflict techniques by participating in role play activities
