Fleming’s Steakhouse in Tampa, Florida, for graduates living
in the area. It was attended by the college’s dean Dr.
Anthony J. Silvagni and the NSU-COM Office of Alumni Affairs representatives
Dr. Howard Neer, and Lynne Cawley. During the dinner gathering, Dr.
Silvagni updated the alumni on the numerous enhancements taking place
taking within the college and throughout NSU’s Davie campus.
These periodic dinner socials serve as a way for alumni to reconnect

10th Annual Clinical Eye Care Conference
and 4th Annual Alumni Reunion- May 19-21, 2006
The College of Optometry hosted its Annual Eyecare Conference in
May, part of which was the 10th anniversary celebration of the Class

Education and were special guests at the dinner. There was
an astounding 25% of the Class of 1996 that attended the dinner and
more than 100 alumni that attended the CE. The main theme of
the CE was “Focus on Women's Eye Health.”
The alumni officers ran a video that had been prepared by the class
president at the time of graduation- bringing back a lot of memories

from the Class of 1996, spoke about one of their classmates, John

Christopher Strong (Pharm.D. ‘98)
Serves as a Clinical Pharmacist for Deploying Soldiers
Dr. Christopher Strong is currently contracted by the Department of Defense,
Department of the Army as a clinical pharmacist at Fort Carson, Colorado. He
is a credentialed Doctor of Pharmacy working with deploying soldiers at the Soldier
Readiness Processing site. His job is to ensure that a deploying soldier's
medications are appropriate for treatment, are within formulary, appropriate
to fit in with daily activities, appropriate for conditions (climate, hygiene,
etc.) and in correct quantities. Naturally, he provides any needed counseling. Additionally,
he helps screen whether a soldier is deployable based on disease state and/or
medications.
Fort Carson is the model for the Army's new focus on Traumatic
Brain Injury. Dr. Strong is a member of the TBI Interdisciplinary
Management Group and helps determine appropriate therapy for screened
soldiers. He also functions as a "medical provider" with
the Docs, PA's and RNP's in doing Post Deployment Health Assessments
on individual soldiers.
Interestingly, he is the only dedicated pharmacist of this type in
the armed forces and the Army will present a poster on his successful
activities at the Annual Joint Services Pharmacy Convention in Atlanta
this summer. The poster will recommend a dedicated, deployment
pharmacist be installed at all deployment sites within the Armed
Forces. |
