“Enhancing Human Performance: Good vs. Evil”
Wednesday, February 22, 2006
7:00–9:00 p.m., Knight Auditorium/SBEBG 1124, DeSantis Bldg.
Sponsored by the Division of Math, Science, and Technology
What does it mean to “enhance” human performance? Is it evil to pursue enhancement through the use of steroids and other drugs? This multi-faceted event will engage the audience to think critically about human performance enhancement. Student presentations highlighting general issues will be followed by a guided discussion about controversial steroid use, led by Larry Starr, M.Ed., NSU assistant athletic director for sports medicine and former head athletic trainer for the Florida Marlins and the Cincinnati Reds baseball teams.  Finally, a moderated faculty panel will discuss scientific and ethical aspects of enhancement, including consideration of controversial issues such as anti-aging and cloning research. The panel will include Division of Math, Science, and Technology faculty members Elizabeth Swann, Ph.D. (moderator), Robin Sherman, Ph.D., Josh Loomis, Ph.D., and Mark Jaffe, D.P.M. The event will be introduced by Patricia McGinn, Ph.D.

Both events are free. For more information contact the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Office of the Dean at (954) 262-8408.
