Three NSU Women’s Soccer Players Earn All-South Region Honors
Nova Southeastern University had three selections to the 2006 DAKTRONICS All-South Region Women's Soccer Team, announced November 15, 2006. Sophomore midfielders Lauren Huffman and Stephanie Quinones joined sophomore forward Shurell Burton on the All-South Region Second Team. Voting for the DAKTRONICS Women's Soccer All-Region Team was conducted among the Sports Information Directors at South Region institutions.
Burton was a unanimous selection to the All-Sunshine State Conference First team and led the Sharks with 15 goals and 34 points to go along with four assists. She started 15 games for NSU before missing most of the postseason due to injury. Burton was named SSC Co-Offensive Player of the Week on 9/10 and led the SSC in regular season game-winning goals with six. She finished the season second in the SSC with 2.27 points per game and set the NSU women's soccer NCAA record for most goals, game-winning goals and points in a season.
Huffman was named an All-Sunshine State Conference Honorable Mention after her sophomore season in which she amassed four goals and four assists for 12 points from the left outside midfielder spot. She appeared in 17 games and started 16 for the Sharks. Lauren scored the game-winning goal in a 4-0 win over Barry on 9/2 and tied her career high with a five-point night against Lynn on 10/10 with two goals and an assist. She tallied two assists in 3-1 win over Florida Southern.
Quinones was named to the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team as a playmaking central midfielder. As a co-captain, she started all 17 matches, tallying four goals, three assists and 11 points for the Sharks. She registered three points against Webber International on 8/28.
The NSU women's soccer team recorded their best season in program history, going 11-4-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
It was a banner year for the Sharks; one that saw them set team records for longest win streak (8), best start (8-0) and their first undefeated season at home (9-0-1). NSU's coming out party culminated in the program's first-ever NCAA appearance. |
