Alvin Sherman Library Premiere Lecture Series: “Discourse, Issues and Challenges of 21st Century Living”- Friday, September 29, 2006

The Circle of Friends of the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center invites you to the premiere season of Discourse, a series of lectures on popular culture, public policy, economics, public health, and international affairs.

The first topic of the series, “Made in the USA: Where are we now?”, discusses whether we should care that China has opened its doors to capitalist ventures.  Does the growth of industry in the Far East have an impact on the cost of goods in the Broward County or the availability of jobs in the state of Florida? Industry leaders Tom Eggleston and Mano Howard will discuss the impact of globalization. They will examine the impact the global shift of production of apparel has had on employment and discuss the road ahead and the lessons learned.

The lecture will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in the Alvin Sherman Library on NSU’s Davie Campus.  The cost of attendance is $300 for Circle of Friends members for the entire series and $350 for non-members for the entire series, which includes a membership in the Circle of Friends.  All proceeds from Discourse benefit the Circle of Friends “Creating a Visual Legacy” project.  For more information and to have a brochure sent to you, please contact the Department of Library Development at (954) 262-4627 or gforrest@nova.edu.

Discourse provides a unique opportunity to engage in dialogue on timely issues of the day and to interact with distinguished scholars, public figures, authors, and policy makers. “Issues and Challenges of 21st Century Living” -- Less than a decade into the century, America has experienced dramatic cultural shifts, changed demographics, astronomical technological advances – in essence, a changed world. The season will focus on the critical challenges which America will have to address in the coming years.
